WhatsApp API With a Personal Number: Your Real Options

In a lot of small businesses, the business number is the founder's personal WhatsApp. Customers have it, suppliers have it, the family group is on it, and so is the wholesale group that brings in half the orders. When you decide to automate reminders or bring in a team, the question comes up fast: can that same number go on the WhatsApp API?

The honest answer to the WhatsApp API personal number question has three parts. On Meta's official platform, a personal WhatsApp number only qualifies if you delete its WhatsApp account first. There is a two-step route that avoids deletion by turning the account into a WhatsApp Business app account and then using coexistence. And there are linked-device tools that work with a personal number as it is, with their own risks. Here is what each one costs you.

The official answer: only after deleting the account

Meta's rule for the Cloud API is that the number must not be in use with WhatsApp. Its migration guide states it plainly: to use an existing WhatsApp Messenger number with the Cloud API, you must first delete your WhatsApp Messenger account.

Coexistence, the feature that lets a number stay in the app while connected to the API, does not cover personal accounts. It is built only for numbers on the WhatsApp Business app, and it is offered through partners. So for a number on regular WhatsApp, the official choices are delete-and-register, or move it to the Business app first.

What you give up when a personal number goes on the API

If you delete the account and register the number with Meta, the number becomes a business sender hosted by Meta. That changes more than the app on your phone:

  • Your personal WhatsApp on that number ends. There's no app account for it any more. Friends and family messaging you reach the business instead, and outside the 24-hour customer service window you can only start a conversation with an approved template.
  • Your groups are gone. WhatsApp's help centre says deleting an account removes it from all its groups. The family group, the school parents group and the supplier group all lose you.
  • Your history does not come with you. Meta says existing messaging history is lost in this kind of migration, and WhatsApp says deletion also removes the account's Google Account backup. Export anything you need first.
  • Your profile is replaced. People see the display name and business profile you register, once approved, not your personal photo and status.
  • It becomes a company asset. The number now lives in a business portfolio, tied to a verified business and a payment method. Moving it back means deregistering it from the API.
  • Calls and SMS still work. Meta notes that a registered number can still make normal calls and texts. Only WhatsApp moves.

If the number is a salesperson's or a manager's, rather than the founder's, there is another issue. Meta does not grant Official Business Account status to business employees' numbers, and a number that belongs to a person is a number that leaves when they do.

The two-step route: personal to Business app to coexistence

If you want automation on the number without giving up the app, there's a longer path:

  1. Move the account to the WhatsApp Business app. WhatsApp supports moving a Messenger account to the Business app on the same number, carrying chat history and media across. Back up first, and note that one number can't run on both apps at once.
  2. Connect the Business app number to the API through a partner that supports coexistence. You scan a QR code inside the app, choose whether to share chat history, and the app keeps working.

What you get: the app stays on your phone with your chats and groups, and your partner's tool can send templates and handle one-to-one chats through the Cloud API, with up to 180 days of history synced if you allow it. What you trade: groups stay app-only and are not synced to the API, broadcast lists, disappearing messages and view once are switched off, API throughput is fixed at 20 messages per second, and the main phone has to be used regularly or the connection drops after about 14 days. Our WhatsApp coexistence guide covers each of these. It also means your personal account is now, permanently, a business account.

The QR route: linked-device tools

The third option skips Meta's platform altogether. Linked-number tools connect to your existing WhatsApp account as a linked device, the same mechanism WhatsApp Web uses. You scan a QR code with your phone, and the tool can read and send messages on that number, including in groups you are already in.

Linked-device tools are not endorsed by Meta, and WhatsApp still enforces its rules on the account. Fast bulk sending to people who never messaged you is the quickest way to lose a number. Our explainer on unofficial WhatsApp APIs goes through how they work and how to keep risk down, and why WhatsApp bans numbers covers the triggers.

Which route fits your situation

  • Solo founder whose personal number is the business line, mostly replying to customers. A linked-device workspace keeps everything as it is and lets you add a teammate. Plan to separate personal and business numbers over time.
  • Same founder, now sending order updates or OTPs at volume. Get a dedicated business number on the Cloud API for those notifications, and keep the personal number for conversations. Do not delete a number your family and groups depend on just to send receipts.
  • A rep's personal number with all the client chats on it. Move those clients to a company-owned number deliberately, and use a shared inbox so the history belongs to the business. Our guide to WhatsApp API phone number requirements helps you choose one.
  • A number that is already a WhatsApp Business app account. Coexistence or a linked-device tool, depending on whether you need templates or groups.

Where Tenashi fits

Tenashi is built for the first and third cases above. You link your existing WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number, personal or not, with a QR scan. Your history imports, the phone keeps working, messages you type on the phone show up in the shared inbox, and your team can work DMs and groups with a CRM under each chat, notes and assignments. The developer API on every paid plan can send to a phone number or post into an existing group, from $18/mo.

Two honest limits. Tenashi is not Meta's official platform, so it has no templates, buttons or green tick and is not for OTPs or high-volume alerts. And WhatsApp can still ban numbers that spam. Tenashi paces every send, caps new chats started through the API at 50 per number per day, pauses identical text sent to many chats, and warms up new numbers, which reduces risk without guaranteeing anything.

FAQ

Can I use my personal WhatsApp number with the WhatsApp Business API?

Only after deleting its WhatsApp account. Meta requires that a number registered on the Cloud API is not in use with WhatsApp, and coexistence only covers WhatsApp Business app numbers. You can move the account to the Business app first and then use coexistence, or use a linked-device tool that works with the number as it is.

Will my contacts know I moved my number to the API?

They will see a change. Your personal profile is replaced by the business display name and profile, and they reach a business sender instead of you on your phone. If they message you, you can reply freely for 24 hours; after that, you need an approved template to start a conversation. Groups lose you entirely.

Can I keep my personal chats if I move to the WhatsApp Business app?

Yes. WhatsApp supports moving a Messenger account to the WhatsApp Business app on the same number, bringing chat history and media with it. Back up before you start and keep the phone on until the transfer finishes. One number can't run on both apps at once, so the regular WhatsApp app stops working for that number.

Is it safe to use a personal number with a linked-device tool?

It can be, if the tool and your habits are careful. Linked-device tools are not Meta's official platform, and WhatsApp can ban numbers that send spam-like traffic, such as fast bulk messages to people who never wrote to you. Use tools that pace sends, start few new chats a day and keep messages personal.

Should a business use an employee's personal number?

Not for the long term. A personal number leaves with the person, Meta does not grant the blue check to business employees' numbers, and the conversations sit on one phone. Use a company-owned number for business messaging, and a shared inbox so the whole team and the history stay with the business.

A personal number can carry a business a long way, but deleting its WhatsApp account is rarely the right first step. If you want your team on that number today, with groups and history intact, see every Tenashi feature.
