How to See Deleted WhatsApp Photos and Videos
Deleted photos and videos behave completely differently from deleted text, and the difference works in your favour.
Text lives only inside WhatsApp. Media, if auto-download was on, gets saved to your device's storage as an ordinary file. Deleting the chat message removes WhatsApp's message — it doesn't reach into a file the operating system has already filed elsewhere.
That makes deleted media the most recoverable thing on this list.
First: check your gallery
Before anything else. If auto-download was enabled when the media arrived, it's probably still on the phone.
Android:
Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Images
Also check WhatsApp Video, WhatsApp Documents and WhatsApp Audio. Or just open your gallery
app and look at the WhatsApp Images album, sorted by date.
iPhone: open Photos → Recents and scroll to the time it arrived. WhatsApp media saves to the camera roll when "Save to Camera Roll" is on for that chat.
Sort by date, find the timestamp, done. This resolves it more often than any technical method.
Why notification history doesn't help here
Android's notification log stores notification text. A photo arrives as a notification saying "Photo" — the image itself was never in the log.
So the single most-recommended method for deleted messages is useless for media. Worth knowing before you go looking.
The same applies to third-party notification-reader apps. Some cache thumbnails, but they're working from whatever the notification carried, which for media is very little.
Check the .Statuses folder for statuses
Different case, same principle. Viewed WhatsApp statuses are cached on Android:
Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media → .Statuses
It's a hidden folder — enable "show hidden files" in your file manager. Contents are cleared roughly every 24 hours, so this is same-day only.
If auto-download was off
Then the file never reached your storage, and the message is the only thing that held it. Your options narrow to:
- A backup restore from before the deletion. Backups include media if "include videos" was enabled and the backup completed. Restoring rolls your entire history back — see recovering deleted WhatsApp messages.
- Someone else's copy. In a group, a member who was offline when the delete fired still has the original. Ask.
- A forward. If anyone forwarded it before deletion, that copy is untouched.
Turn auto-download on for next time
Since this is the method that actually works, make it available:
WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download — set photos to Wi-Fi at minimum.
Trade-off: storage fills faster and every image lands in your gallery. For a business phone handling order photos, proofs of delivery and damage claims, that's usually worth it.
Why businesses lose media specifically
Media deletion causes disproportionate damage for businesses because photos often are the record:
- Damage claims. A customer sends photos of a damaged item, then deletes them after you offer a replacement instead of a refund. Your claim against the courier just lost its evidence.
- Proof of delivery. A driver posts a doorstep photo in a group; it's cleared later during a tidy-up; a "never arrived" dispute follows.
- Design approvals. A customer approves a proof image, production runs, then they dispute the design and the approved version is gone.
- Payment screenshots. A customer sends a transfer confirmation, deletes it, and later claims they never paid — or that they paid more.
- Exposed documents. Someone sends an ID or a card photo and deletes it seconds later. For your own incident log you need to know exactly what was exposed and when.
In each case the file may still be in some employee's gallery, on some phone, if auto-download happened to be on. That's not a records system.
The business version
When a number is connected to a platform that stores messages server-side on arrival, media is downloaded and stored when it's delivered — not left to a phone setting. A later "delete for everyone" reaches the handset; it can't reach the stored file.
In Tenashi, the image or video stays in the conversation tagged "Deleted on WhatsApp", viewable and downloadable, attached to the right contact and searchable months later. It doesn't depend on whose phone it was or whether auto-download was on.
For photo-heavy operations there's a related benefit: OCR on images means text inside a photo — an address, an invoice number, a meter reading — becomes searchable rather than trapped in a picture.
Scope as always: chats with your own connected business number, from the date you connect it.
Quick reference
| Situation | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Android, auto-download was on | WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Images or your gallery |
| iPhone, save to camera roll on | Photos → Recents, around the arrival time |
| Deleted status you viewed today | Android .Statuses hidden folder |
| Auto-download was off | Backup restore, a forward, or another group member |
| Business number, connected inbox | Still in the thread, tagged as deleted |
Media recovery checklist
- Check the gallery or WhatsApp Images folder by date — this works most of the time
- Check
.Statusesif it was a status, same day only - Ask whether anyone forwarded it
- In a group, ask an offline member
- Turn auto-download on so next time it's already saved
- For business media, store it server-side so it doesn't depend on phone settings
Tenashi keeps every message and attachment sent to your connected number, marks the ones later deleted, and runs a shared inbox and CRM on the same number.
Pricing is flat, from $18/mo.

FAQ
Can I see a photo someone deleted on WhatsApp?
Often yes. If auto-download was on, the file was saved to your device's storage separately from the
chat, and deleting the message doesn't remove it. Check your gallery's WhatsApp Images album or the
WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Images folder, sorted by the time it arrived.
Where are WhatsApp photos stored on Android?
In Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Images, with
parallel folders for video, audio and documents. Files land there when auto-download saves them,
independently of whether the chat message still exists.
Does notification history show deleted photos?
No. The notification log stores text only, so a photo appears as the word "Photo" with no image attached. Notification history is useful for deleted text messages and useless for deleted media.
Can I recover a deleted WhatsApp status?
Only on the same day, and only on Android. Viewed statuses are cached in the hidden .Statuses
folder under WhatsApp's media directory, and that cache is cleared roughly every 24 hours.
What if auto-download was turned off?
Then the file never reached your storage and only the message held it. Your remaining options are restoring a backup made before the deletion, asking someone who forwarded it, or asking a group member whose device never received the delete instruction.
How do businesses keep deleted photos?
By storing media server-side as it arrives rather than relying on each phone's auto-download setting. In Tenashi the image stays in the conversation tagged "Deleted on WhatsApp", viewable and attached to the right contact regardless of whose phone received it.
Deleted media is usually still on the phone somewhere. For business photos, don't leave that to a setting. Get started.
