WhatsApp Delete for Everyone Not Working? 7 Reasons

There are two ways WhatsApp's delete for everyone lets you down. Either the option simply isn't in the menu, or it worked on your screen and the other person read the message anyway.

Both have specific causes. Here are the seven reasons delete for everyone isn't working, how to tell which one you've hit, and what (if anything) you can still do.

When the option is missing from the menu

1. The time limit has passed

The most common reason. You can delete for everyone for about 2 days and 12 hours after sending. After that, WhatsApp only offers Delete for me. There's no way to extend it. The time limit, explained.

2. It isn't your message

In a one-to-one chat you can only delete your own messages for everyone. A message the other person sent can only be deleted for you. In a group, admins are the exception: they can delete members' messages for everyone.

3. You selected one message too many

If you select several messages and even one is outside the time limit (or isn't yours), WhatsApp offers only Delete for me for the whole selection. Deselect the old ones and try again.

4. You already deleted it for yourself

Once a message is gone from your phone, there's nothing left to select. If you tapped Delete for me by mistake and the Undo prompt has passed, see deleted for me instead of everyone.

When it "worked" but they still saw it

5. They had already read it

Delete for everyone removes the message from the chat; it can't remove it from someone's memory. If they opened the chat before you deleted, the damage is done.

6. The notification got there first

This is the one that surprises people. Many phones show the message text in a notification the moment it arrives. Deleting afterwards doesn't always clear what was already shown, and on Android 11 and later, notification history can keep the text even after you delete. That's how people read "deleted" messages (all the routes are in how to see deleted WhatsApp messages); we cover the Android one in how to see deleted WhatsApp messages on Android.

7. They kept a copy

Anything they did with the message before your delete is theirs to keep:

  • a reply quoting it, which often keeps a snippet of the text;
  • a forward to another chat;
  • a screenshot;
  • a photo or video saved to their camera roll or downloaded to a computer.

A note on "it didn't delete on their side"

Occasionally a recipient says the message is still there in full, with no "This message was deleted" placeholder. WhatsApp doesn't tell you if a delete for everyone didn't succeed on a particular device, for example on a very outdated version of the app. There's nothing to do from your side except ask them to delete it.

What to do when it fails

  • Send a short correction. "Please ignore my last message" is usually enough.
  • Ask them to delete it. They can delete it for themselves, with no time limit.
  • In a group, ask an admin to delete it for everyone, quickly.
  • For the future, consider editing instead of deleting (within 15 minutes) when the message is basically right but contains a wrong detail.

Where Tenashi fits

For a business, the flip side matters more: customers can delete for everyone too, and on a phone that removes your only record of what they said. When your WhatsApp Business number is connected to Tenashi, each message is stored when it arrives. A customer's delete leaves it in the conversation, tagged Deleted on WhatsApp, so your team never has to rely on memory for an address, a price or an agreement.

FAQ

Why is Delete for everyone not showing on WhatsApp?

Usually because the message is older than about two days and twelve hours, or because it isn't your message. If you selected several messages, a single old or received one hides the option for all of them. And if you already deleted it for yourself, there's nothing left to delete.

I deleted for everyone but they still saw it. How?

They either read it before you deleted, saw it in a notification, or kept a copy by quoting, forwarding, screenshotting or saving it. On Android 11 and later, notification history can keep the text of a message even after it's deleted for everyone.

Does Delete for everyone work if they haven't opened the chat?

It removes the message from the chat, but if their phone already showed the text in a notification, they may have read it there. Deleting quickly helps; it doesn't guarantee they never saw it.

Can I delete someone else's message for everyone?

Not in a one-to-one chat. You can only delete their message for yourself. In a group, admins can delete members' messages for everyone, and the group sees that an admin removed it.

Will they be notified that I deleted a message?

There's no separate alert, but the chat shows "This message was deleted" where the message was, so anyone who opens the chat can see that something was removed.
