WhatsApp Delete for Everyone Time Limit, Explained

You sent the message to the wrong chat, or you sent the right message with the wrong number in it. The question is the same either way: is it too late to delete it for everyone?

On WhatsApp the answer depends on one thing, the clock. This guide covers the current WhatsApp delete for everyone time limit, what happens when you miss it, and what the other person can still see even when you make it in time.

The limit: about two and a half days

You can delete a message for everyone for about 2 days and 12 hours after you send it. WhatsApp extended the window to this length in 2022. Before that it was a little over an hour, and when the feature first launched it was seven minutes, which is why older articles still quote those numbers.

The clock starts when you send, not when the other person reads. A message sent on Monday morning can be deleted for everyone until roughly Wednesday evening, whether or not it has been seen.

How to delete for everyone

  1. Press and hold the message (on a computer, hover and open the menu).
  2. Tap Delete.
  3. Choose Delete for everyone.

You can select several messages and delete them together, as long as every one of them is inside the window. If even one is too old, WhatsApp only offers Delete for me for the batch.

What happens after the time limit

Once the window closes, Delete for everyone disappears from the menu. You can still delete the message for yourself, but that only removes it from your phone. The other person keeps it, in full, for as long as they keep the chat.

There is no setting, support request or paid tool that extends the window. WhatsApp's own servers don't hold delivered messages, so there is nothing for WhatsApp to delete on your behalf either. (We explain why in does WhatsApp keep deleted messages.)

What you can do once you've missed it:

  • Say so. A short follow-up ("please ignore the last message, wrong chat") is often all the situation needs.
  • Ask the person to delete it. They can delete it for themselves at any time.
  • In a group, ask an admin. Group admins can delete other members' messages for everyone. Admin deletes have a time limit too, so ask quickly.

What the other person still sees

Deleting in time removes the message from the chat, but it leaves traces:

  • The placeholder. The chat shows "This message was deleted", so they know something was there. More on that in what "This message was deleted" means.
  • The notification. If their phone already showed it on the lock screen, they may have read it. On Android 11 and later, notification history can keep the text after you delete it.
  • Quotes and forwards. If they replied quoting it, forwarded it or took a screenshot, those copies are theirs.
  • Saved media. A photo or video they saved to their camera roll is a separate copy.

So delete for everyone is a good undo for a slip that nobody has acted on yet. It is not a way to make sure a message was never seen. (The full picture of what a recipient can recover is in how to see deleted WhatsApp messages.)

Groups follow the same clock

In a group, you can delete your own message for everyone within the same window. Admins can also delete members' messages for everyone, and the group sees that an admin removed it. The full picture for groups is in deleted messages in WhatsApp groups.

Where Tenashi fits

For a business, the time limit cuts both ways. Your team can retract a wrong price within the window, and a customer can retract an address, an order or an agreement within the same window. On a phone, that customer deletion removes your only copy.

When your WhatsApp Business number is connected to Tenashi, each message is stored on our servers the moment it arrives. If the sender later deletes it for everyone, Tenashi keeps the message in the conversation and tags it Deleted on WhatsApp, so your team sees what was said and that it was withdrawn. That covers chats with your own business number, from the moment it is connected.

FAQ

How long do you have to delete a WhatsApp message for everyone?

About two days and twelve hours from the moment you send it. After that, WhatsApp only offers Delete for me, which removes the message from your phone but leaves it on everyone else's. The window is the same for text, photos, videos, voice notes and documents.

Can you delete a WhatsApp message for everyone after 2 days?

Yes, up to roughly two and a half days. Once that window closes the option disappears from the menu, and nothing can bring it back: no setting, support request or app. You can still ask the other person to delete it, or, in a group, ask an admin.

Does the other person know I deleted a message?

Yes. The chat shows "This message was deleted" in place of the original. They may also have read it already in a notification, and on Android notification history can keep the text after you delete it.

Can I delete a message for everyone if they haven't read it?

Yes, and it works best then. The time limit runs from when you sent the message, not from when it was read, so an unread message can be deleted for everyone at any point inside the window.

Does deleting for everyone remove a photo they already saved?

Not always. Deleting removes the photo from the chat, but a copy the other person saved to their camera roll or downloaded to a computer is a separate file. On iPhone in particular, a photo saved to the Photos app stays there after the chat copy is deleted.

The limit is generous for a slip and useless for a regret. If your business needs a record that doesn't depend on who pressed delete, connect your number to Tenashi.
