Does WhatsApp Keep Deleted Messages on Its Servers?
Sooner or later, everyone who loses an important WhatsApp message has the same thought: WhatsApp must have a copy somewhere. Surely I can ask for it.
You can't, and the reason is how WhatsApp is built. Once you understand where messages actually live, it becomes clear which recovery routes are real and which are wishful thinking.
The short answer
No. WhatsApp does not keep delivered messages on its servers, so it has nothing to give back when you delete one. Messages are end-to-end encrypted, which means WhatsApp couldn't read them even while they were passing through.
Where a WhatsApp message lives
A message travels from the sender's phone, through WhatsApp's servers, to the recipient's devices. The server's job is delivery, not storage:
- In transit, the message is encrypted on the sender's phone and can only be decrypted by the recipient's devices. WhatsApp's servers pass along data they can't read.
- If the recipient is offline, WhatsApp holds the encrypted message until it can deliver it, for up to 30 days. If it still can't be delivered, it's dropped.
- Once delivered, it's removed from WhatsApp's servers.
After that, the only copies are on devices: the phones and linked devices of the people in the chat, plus any backups those devices made.
Why WhatsApp support can't help
People write to WhatsApp support asking for a deleted conversation. The answer is always no, and it's not a policy choice. There is no copy on their side to restore.
The Request account info report in WhatsApp's settings doesn't change this. It covers your account details, such as your profile, groups and settings, not the content of your messages.
So where can a deleted message still exist?
If WhatsApp doesn't have it, these are the places that might:
| Where | When it helps | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| The other person's phone | You deleted it for yourself only | Ask them |
| Your backup | The message existed when the backup ran | Recover from a backup |
| Android notification history | It arrived as a notification, recently | Notification history |
| A business platform the number is connected to | The business stored it on arrival | See below |
Everything else, including apps that promise to "recover WhatsApp messages from the server", is selling something that doesn't exist. Each real route is covered in how to see deleted WhatsApp messages.
What about backups in Google Drive and iCloud?
Backups are stored in your own Google Drive or iCloud account, not on WhatsApp's servers. They're a snapshot taken at a point in time, usually daily, so a message that arrived and was deleted between two backups was never captured. If you turned on end-to-end encrypted backups, only your password or 64-digit key can open them; see forgot your WhatsApp backup password.
What about the police or a court?
WhatsApp publishes that it can't provide message content, for the same reason it can't give it to you. What investigators can sometimes obtain are things like account details and connection information, not the messages themselves. Message content, when it matters legally, usually comes from the devices or backups of the people in the conversation.
Where Tenashi fits
The only place the message survives is with someone who received it and kept it. For a business, that should be the business.
Tenashi connects to your WhatsApp Business number as a linked device, the same way WhatsApp Web does. Each message is decrypted and stored on our servers when it arrives, for your team to work from in a shared inbox. If the customer later deletes it for everyone, the message stays in the conversation tagged Deleted on WhatsApp. It covers your own business number from the moment it's connected, and nothing before that.

FAQ
Does WhatsApp store messages after they're deleted?
No. WhatsApp removes messages from its servers once they're delivered, and they're end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp couldn't read them anyway. After a delete, a copy can only exist on devices that received it, in backups those devices made, or with a business that stored it on arrival.
Can WhatsApp support recover my deleted messages?
No. WhatsApp has no copy of delivered messages, so support has nothing to restore. Recovery has to come from your own backup, the other person's phone, or Android notification history, and each of those only works in particular situations.
How long does WhatsApp keep undelivered messages?
Up to 30 days, in encrypted form, while it tries to deliver them to a phone that's offline. If the message can't be delivered in that time, WhatsApp deletes it from its servers.
Does the Request account info report include my messages?
No. The report covers account information such as your profile details, groups and settings. It does not include the content of your messages, which WhatsApp doesn't have.
Are my WhatsApp backups stored on WhatsApp's servers?
No. Backups go to your own Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) account. If you enabled end-to-end encrypted backups, they can only be opened with your password or 64-digit key.
WhatsApp isn't holding your messages, so the copy that matters is the one you keep. For a business number, keep it in Tenashi.
