Android Notification History: The Complete Guide for WhatsApp

Notification history is the feature behind every "read deleted WhatsApp messages" app, and it's already on your phone. This is the complete version: how to enable it everywhere, how to get more out of it, and its hard limits.

What it is

Android 11 introduced a system log of notifications. Every notification your phone displays is written to it, including the message text WhatsApp puts in the preview.

When a message is deleted, the chat bubble becomes a placeholder. The log entry isn't rewritten, because it was recorded on arrival and nothing goes back to amend it.

That's the entire mechanism. Third-party apps do the same thing with longer retention and a permission you shouldn't grant lightly.

Enabling it, by manufacturer

It's off by default and not retroactive. Enabling it today does nothing for yesterday.

PhonePath
Pixel / stock AndroidSettings → Notifications → Notification history
Samsung (One UI)Settings → Notifications → Advanced settings → Notification history
Xiaomi / Redmi / POCOSettings → Notifications → Notification history (absent on some builds)
OnePlus (OxygenOS)Settings → Notifications → Notification history
MotorolaSettings → Notifications → Notification history
Oppo / RealmeSettings → Notifications & status bar → Notification management
NothingSettings → Notifications → Notification history

If you can't find it, search "notification history" in your Settings search bar. If it genuinely isn't there, you're likely below Android 11 or on a build where the manufacturer removed it.

Reading it

Two routes:

  1. Quick: pull the notification shade down fully and tap History at the bottom
  2. Full: Settings → Notifications → Notification history

Entries are chronological with app name, sender and text. Scroll to when the message arrived.

Getting more out of it

Don't mute important chats. A muted chat produces no notification, so nothing is logged. This is the single biggest cause of an empty history when you need it.

Check your notification preview setting. WhatsApp → Settings → Notifications. If previews are hidden, the notification says "New message" and the log holds nothing useful. Privacy versus recoverability — pick deliberately.

Exclude WhatsApp from battery optimisation. If Android puts WhatsApp to sleep, messages arrive in delayed batches and notifications may be suppressed. On Samsung: Settings → Battery → Background usage limits, and make sure WhatsApp isn't in the sleeping apps list.

Samsung users: use Good Lock's NotiStar. First-party Samsung software with far longer retention than the system log — weeks rather than a day — without granting notification access to an unknown developer. See the Samsung guide.

What it will never show you

Be realistic about the ceiling:

  • Roughly 24 hours. Most builds clear it daily.
  • Text only. Photos show as "Photo", voice notes as "Voice message". No media.
  • Truncated. Long messages are cut at notification length.
  • Nothing retroactive. It can't recover what it didn't record.
  • Nothing from muted chats, chats you had open on arrival, or Do Not Disturb periods.
  • One device. It's a log on that handset, not an account-level record.
  • Noisy in groups. A busy group buries the one entry you want.

When notification history isn't enough

It's a personal convenience feature. For a business it fails on every axis that matters: expires in a day, lives on one phone, holds no media, can't be searched, and disappears when the handset does.

If a customer deletes a message that mattered — an address, an agreed price, an abusive line — a truncated preview on one employee's phone for 24 hours isn't a record.

When a number is connected to a platform that stores messages server-side on arrival, the message is written to a database when delivered. A later "delete for everyone" reaches the phone, not the database. In Tenashi it stays in the thread tagged "Deleted on WhatsApp" — full text, media included, searchable months later, visible to the whole team.

No notification permissions, no mute problem, no 24-hour expiry, no dependence on which phone.

Scope: chats with your own connected business number, from the date you connect it.

Troubleshooting

"Notification history is empty." It was enabled after the messages you want, the log has cleared, or the messages never produced notifications — muted chat, DND, or the chat was open.

"I can't find the setting." Search Settings for "notification history". Check your Android version. Some manufacturer builds omit it entirely.

"It shows 'New message' with no text." Your WhatsApp notification previews are hidden. Turn them on if recoverability matters more than shoulder-surfing privacy.

"Entries disappear within hours." Aggressive memory management on some builds. Nothing to do about it beyond using Samsung's NotiStar if you're on a Galaxy.

Tenashi keeps every message sent to your connected number, with a shared inbox and CRM on that same number.

Pricing is flat, from $18/mo.

FAQ

How do I enable notification history on Android?

Settings → Notifications → Notification history, then toggle it on. Samsung places it under Advanced settings within the Notifications menu. It requires Android 11 or later and records only from the moment you enable it.

Why is my notification history empty?

The most common causes are enabling it after the messages you want, the log clearing on its daily cycle, or the messages never generating notifications — muted chats, Do Not Disturb, or having the chat open when they arrived.

How long does notification history last?

Usually around 24 hours, with variation by manufacturer. It's designed for reviewing notifications you just dismissed rather than as an archive, so anything older is generally gone.

Can notification history show deleted photos?

No. The log stores notification text only, so media appears as "Photo" or "Voice message" with no content. If auto-download saved the file to your gallery it may still be there, but the log won't show it.

Does notification history work on iPhone?

No. iOS keeps no persistent readable log of notification text and doesn't let apps read the notification stream. There is no equivalent feature and no legitimate app that works around it.

What's better than notification history for a business?

Storing messages server-side as they arrive, so the record doesn't expire, isn't tied to one handset, includes media, and is searchable. Notification history is a personal convenience, not a business record.

Turn it on today — it can't help you retroactively. And don't mistake a 24-hour log on one phone for a business record. Get started.
