Does Deleting a WhatsApp Chat Delete It for Both?
You want a conversation gone. You open the chat menu, tap Delete chat, and it disappears from your list. The natural assumption is that it is gone for the other person too.
It isn't. Deleting a WhatsApp chat only ever affects your own phone. This guide explains exactly what Delete chat, Clear chat and Delete for everyone each do, what the other person keeps, and whether they find out.
The short answer
| Action | Your phone | Their phone | Do they know? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete chat | Chat removed | Unchanged | No |
| Clear chat | Messages removed, chat stays in your list | Unchanged | No |
| Archive chat | Hidden from your list, nothing deleted | Unchanged | No |
| Delete for me (one message) | Message removed | Unchanged | No |
| Delete for everyone (one message) | Removed | Removed, shows a placeholder | Yes |
Only the last row touches the other person's phone, and it works one message at a time, within a time limit.
Delete chat
Delete chat removes the whole conversation from your chat list and your phone. The other person's copy is untouched: every message, photo and voice note stays on their side exactly as it was. They get no notification, and nothing in their chat changes.
If they message you again, the chat reappears on your phone, starting fresh from the new message.
WhatsApp may offer to delete the media from this chat too. That only refers to photos and files on your device.
Clear chat
Clear chat empties the messages but keeps the chat in your list, so the contact and any settings (mute, wallpaper, disappearing messages) stay as they were. Again, it only affects your phone. You can usually choose to keep starred messages when clearing.
Archive chat
Archiving hides a chat from your main list without deleting anything. People sometimes archive by accident and think a chat has vanished; if that sounds familiar, see WhatsApp chats disappeared.
The only way to remove messages from their phone
Delete for everyone is the one action that reaches the other person's device. It has three limits:
- One message at a time, or a selection of messages, never a whole chat in one tap.
- Only within the time limit, about two days and twelve hours after sending. See the delete for everyone time limit.
- Only your own messages in a one-to-one chat. You can't delete the other person's messages from their phone.
If you have already deleted the chat, you can't do this anymore: the messages are no longer on your phone to select. Deleting the chat first and regretting it later is a common way to lose the chance.
What about deleting your WhatsApp account?
Deleting your account removes your message history from your phone, your backups and your account data. It does not remove copies of messages you already sent to other people. Their chats with you remain on their phones.
What about blocking?
Blocking stops new messages and calls between you. It doesn't delete anything, on either side.
Groups work the same way
Deleting a group chat (you have to exit the group first) removes it from your phone only. The group and its history carry on for everyone else. Within the time limit, you can delete your own messages in the group for everyone, and admins can delete members' messages for everyone. More in deleted messages in WhatsApp groups.
If you are on the other side
If someone deleted a chat with you, nothing on your phone changes; you keep everything. If they used Delete for everyone on particular messages, you'll see "This message was deleted" in those places. The guide on how to see deleted WhatsApp messages covers what, if anything, can still be read.
Where Tenashi fits
For a business, "only your phone" is the uncomfortable part. If someone on your team deletes or clears a customer chat on the business phone, that history is gone for the company, while the customer keeps theirs.
When your WhatsApp Business number is connected to Tenashi, conversations are stored on our servers as messages arrive and shared with your team in one inbox. Clearing a chat on the phone doesn't remove it from Tenashi, and if a customer deletes a message for everyone, Tenashi keeps it tagged Deleted on WhatsApp.

FAQ
If I delete a WhatsApp chat, does the other person still have it?
Yes. Delete chat only removes the conversation from your own phone. The other person keeps every message, photo and file, and nothing in their chat changes. The only way to remove messages from their phone is Delete for everyone, one message at a time, within the time limit.
Does the other person know if I delete our WhatsApp chat?
No. Deleting or clearing a chat sends no notification and changes nothing on their side. They only see a sign of deletion when you use Delete for everyone on a message, which leaves "This message was deleted" in its place.
What is the difference between Clear chat and Delete chat?
Clear chat removes the messages but keeps the chat in your list, along with settings such as mute and wallpaper. Delete chat removes the conversation from your list entirely. Both affect only your own phone.
Can I delete a whole WhatsApp chat for everyone?
No. WhatsApp has no option to delete an entire conversation from the other person's phone. You can select several of your own messages and delete them for everyone, but only those sent within roughly the last two and a half days.
If I delete my WhatsApp account, are my messages deleted for others?
No. Deleting your account removes your history and account data, but copies of messages you sent stay on the recipients' phones. Delete for everyone, within its time limit, is the only way to remove them.
Your phone is the only thing a delete chat reaches. If your business needs its chats to outlast whoever holds the phone, connect your number to Tenashi.
