If You Report Someone on WhatsApp, Will They Know?
You're about to tap Report on a WhatsApp chat and want to know first: if I report someone on WhatsApp, will they know? No. WhatsApp's help center says the user or group won't be notified of your report.
What WhatsApp does receive is a small slice of the conversation, and a report doesn't automatically ban anyone. This page covers what's sent, what changes in your chat, what happens when you report a group, whether a mistaken report can be undone, and what it means if your own business number is the one being reported.
What WhatsApp receives when you report
When you report a person in an individual chat, WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages they've sent you. If a call took place, it may also receive basic info about the last five calls with that person, such as who started the call and how long it lasted.
Alongside the messages, the help center says WhatsApp receives:
- the ID of the reported user or group
- when the message was sent
- the type of message (image, video, text and so on)
- possibly how the first contact between you and the reported user or group was started
It doesn't describe your whole chat history being sent. The five-message figure is the one WhatsApp gives.
Will they know?
The reported user or group won't be notified. WhatsApp states it on both its reporting pages, and for groups it adds that no one in the group will know about the report.
Two details sit next to that rule:
- Blocking is different. If you also block them, you'll see "You blocked this contact" under their name and in the chat, and WhatsApp says they won't see that. Whether a blocked person can tell is covered in what happens when you block someone on WhatsApp.
- Message history can carry a report back to you. If you sent someone message history in a group, and they report content that came in that history, you'll be the one reported. The original sender of the message won't be.
What changes in your own chat
Reporting alone doesn't stop anything. WhatsApp says reporting a user without blocking them won't stop you from receiving their messages, calls and status updates.
When you report, the steps include a checkbox to also block the sender or exit the group and delete the chat. That tells you the chat isn't removed by default: deleting it is an option you tick. The help center doesn't list any other change to your chat list after a report.
If you block as well, the existing chat stays in your chat list, and you can delete or archive it afterwards.
How to report a contact, a business or a group
On Android, to report a contact or unknown sender:
- Open the chat with the sender.
- Tap More options (three dots) > More > Report.
- Tick the box if you also want to block the sender or exit the group and delete the chat.
- Tap Report.
On iPhone, open the chat, tap the contact name or number to open Contact Info, scroll to the bottom and tap Report followed by their name or number, then choose Report and block or Report.
A business (Android): open the chat, tap the contact info to see the business profile, scroll to the bottom and tap Report business > Report. A box lets you also block the business.
A group: open the group and tap the group name, then Report group > Report (on iPhone, Report or Report and exit). You can also tick Report group when you exit the group.
What happens when you report a group
When you report a group, the last five messages sent to you in that group are sent to WhatsApp. The help center adds that no one in the group will know about the report.
On Android, WhatsApp says reporting a group removes you from it. The iPhone steps give you two buttons, Report and Report and exit, and say that Report and exit removes you. Either way, if you're out and want back in, the admin has to invite you again. If you reported a group and want to cut off particular members too, you can block the admin or members separately.
You can't block a group. WhatsApp's suggested alternative is to exit it and block the group admin. If your problem is being added to groups at all, the privacy settings control who can add you.
Reported by mistake
WhatsApp doesn't document any way to take a report back. Its help pages describe no undo, and they say that once you've submitted a report you don't need to take further action or share more details.
They also say contacting WhatsApp outside the in-app review process won't speed things up or change the decision, and that WhatsApp will acknowledge receipt but not contact you again. What a mistaken report does to the other person isn't described beyond that. The same page says a report of conduct that breaks the Terms of Service won't necessarily lead to a ban.
If you reported a contact by accident, they still aren't told, so nothing changes on their side. If you also ticked the block box, unblocking them is the one thing you can reverse.
Reports and your own business number
This is the side that matters if you message customers. WhatsApp says it might ban accounts if it believes account activity violates its Terms of Service, and that it keeps the right to ban a user without notification. One report won't necessarily lead to a ban, but reports add up: WhatsApp's guide to using the app responsibly says it uses machine learning and reports from users to find accounts that send unwanted automated messages, and that it bans accounts that are reported multiple times.
WhatsApp doesn't publish how many reports trigger action, so any number you read elsewhere is a guess. Its advice is to message people who contacted you first or asked you to contact them, and to stop when someone asks you to. Our guides on why WhatsApp bans numbers and the WhatsApp spam filter go through the patterns, and how to unban a WhatsApp number covers what to do after one.
Where Tenashi fits
If a customer reports your business number, you won't be told, and the number can be banned without notice. The first defence is who you message: people who expect to hear from you have no reason to report. The second is how you send, because WhatsApp watches for automated, bulk patterns too.
When your number is connected to Tenashi, sends are human-paced and warm-up-aware, and Tenashi shows the recipient a brief typing indicator before each message. It may also warn on or block a risky burst of similar messages. That lowers ban risk, but it can't stop someone who didn't want your message from reporting it, and it guarantees nothing about bans. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More in our guide to staying clear of a WhatsApp ban.

FAQ
If I report someone on WhatsApp, will they know?
No. WhatsApp's help center says the user or group won't be notified of your report. It receives up to five of the last messages they sent you, but nothing is sent to them. If you also block them, they don't see your blocked banner.
What happens when you report someone on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp receives up to the last five messages they sent you and, if a call took place, basic info about the last five calls. A report doesn't necessarily lead to a ban, and it doesn't stop their messages unless you also block them.
What happens when you report someone on WhatsApp by mistake?
WhatsApp documents no way to undo a report. The person isn't told, and WhatsApp says you don't need to take further action after submitting. Contacting WhatsApp outside the in-app process won't change the decision, so carry on as normal, or unblock them if you also ticked the block box.
What happens when you report a group on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp receives the last five messages sent to you in the group, and no one in the group is told. On Android, reporting removes you from the group; on iPhone you choose Report or Report and exit. To rejoin after leaving, an admin has to invite you again.
If I report someone on WhatsApp, will the chat disappear?
Not by default. Reporting a user doesn't stop their messages, and the chat stays in your list unless you tick the option to exit the group and delete the chat. If you block them too, the existing chat remains in your list.
Reports go to WhatsApp, not to the person, and the message itself is what gives people a reason to send one. For a team sending from one number, get started with Tenashi.
