Can You Still Use the WhatsApp App After the API?

The number your customers know lives on a phone at the front desk, or in the owner's pocket. Someone proposes moving it to the WhatsApp API, and the person holding the phone asks the only question they care about: will WhatsApp still work on this phone afterwards?

Whether you can use the WhatsApp app after the API depends on how you connect. A full migration to Meta's Cloud API takes the number out of the app entirely. Coexistence keeps the WhatsApp Business app working alongside the API, with a list of limits. Linked-number tools don't change the phone at all, because they connect the way WhatsApp Web does.

Here's what each path means for the phone, the chats and the groups, so nobody gets surprised on switch-over day.

The short answer, by path

Only one of the three paths takes WhatsApp off the phone.

Full migration: the app stops

To register a number that's already on WhatsApp with the Cloud API, you delete the WhatsApp account on it first.

Meta's docs say numbers already in use with WhatsApp can't be registered until they're deleted. For a Business app number, Meta's migration guide lays out the steps:

  1. Back up your chat history from the WhatsApp Business app, because Meta says the existing messaging history will be lost.
  2. In the app, go to Settings, then Account, then Delete my account.
  3. Wait up to 3 minutes for the number to become available.
  4. Register the number on the Cloud API, directly or through your provider.

From then on, the number lives on Meta's servers, not on a phone. You can't open it in the WhatsApp Business app again unless you deregister it from the Cloud API. Our guide to migrating a WhatsApp number to the API covers PINs, downtime and what customers see.

This path suits businesses whose WhatsApp traffic is mostly automated, like alerts and codes at volume, where no human needs the phone.

Coexistence: Business app and API on one number

If your number runs on the WhatsApp Business app, coexistence lets you keep using the app while a provider connects the same number to the Cloud API.

Messages you send from the app stay free; messages sent through the Cloud API are billed at Cloud API rates. Messages you type in the app are mirrored to the API side as smb_message_echoes webhooks, so your system sees both. But the number changes in ways the person holding the phone will notice. From Meta's Business app onboarding docs, as of October 2026:

  • All linked devices are unlinked at onboarding. You can relink supported ones; WhatsApp for Windows and WhatsApp for WearOS aren't supported.
  • Broadcast lists are disabled. Existing ones become read-only and you can't create new ones.
  • Disappearing messages, view once and live location are turned off for one-to-one chats.
  • Group chats aren't synced to the API. They keep working in the app, but your API system won't see them.
  • Throughput is fixed at 20 messages per second, against 80 by default for regular Cloud API numbers.
  • The app has to stay in use. Meta lists "primary device inactive for approximately 14 days" as a disconnection reason, with an account_update webhook telling your provider the link was removed.
  • History sync is optional: up to six months of one-to-one chats, if you agree at onboarding.

Coexistence is for the WhatsApp Business app. A personal WhatsApp number isn't covered, which is a common surprise; our guide on using a personal number with the WhatsApp API covers the options. For every coexistence limit in one place, see our guide to WhatsApp coexistence.

Linked-number tools: the phone stays the phone

These tools connect as a linked device, so nothing on the phone changes.

A linked-number tool scans a QR code from your phone, the same way you'd open WhatsApp Web, and becomes one of the account's companion devices. The phone keeps every feature it had: groups, broadcast lists, status, calls, disappearing messages, the lot. Messages typed on the phone appear in the tool, and messages sent from the tool appear on the phone. Both views are the same account.

The catches are different in kind:

  • The phone must be used. WhatsApp's help center gives the limit: a phone left unused for over 14 days logs its linked devices out. A phone in a drawer will eventually take the tool offline.
  • The phone is in control. Anyone with the phone can remove the tool under Linked devices, deliberately or by accident.
  • It's not official. WhatsApp's terms don't authorize unofficial clients, numbers that spam can be banned, and there are no templates, buttons or green tick. Our explainer on the WhatsApp Web API covers how these connections work.

This path suits teams where people still chat from the phone every day and the business lives in groups.

How to choose

Answer five questions and the path usually picks itself.

  1. Does someone need to chat from the phone daily? If yes, rule out full migration.
  2. Do groups matter to the business? If yes, only a linked-number tool lets your system see and post in them.
  3. What volume do you need? Thousands of messages an hour, or OTPs, mean the Cloud API.
  4. Do you need templates, buttons or a verified identity? That's the official platform, through migration or coexistence.
  5. Personal app or Business app? Coexistence only works for the WhatsApp Business app.

Plenty of businesses combine them: a dedicated Cloud API number for alerts and codes, and the familiar number, still on the phone, for conversations.

Where Tenashi fits

If the answer to "will the phone still work?" has to be yes, Tenashi keeps it that way. You link your existing WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number by QR scan, and the phone carries on exactly as before, groups and broadcast lists included. Your team works the same chats from a shared inbox with a CRM under each one, and anything typed on the phone shows up there too, with a message.sent webhook for your systems. The API sends from the same number, paced at one message every 4 to 12 seconds.

The honest limits: keep the phone that owns the number in regular use, because WhatsApp logs out linked devices when it goes quiet for too long. Tenashi isn't endorsed by Meta, and WhatsApp can still act on a number that spams; ban protection reduces the risk rather than removing it.

FAQ

Can I use WhatsApp on my phone and the API at the same time?

It depends on the path. A standard Cloud API migration removes the number from the app. Coexistence lets a WhatsApp Business app number work in the app and on the Cloud API together, with some features turned off. Linked-number tools connect like WhatsApp Web, so the phone app keeps working fully.

What happens to my chats when I move my number to the API?

In a full migration you delete the WhatsApp account first, and Meta says the existing messaging history is lost, so back it up. With coexistence, chats stay in the Business app and up to six months of one-to-one history can sync to the API. Linked-number tools leave chats on the phone and copy recent history.

Can I go back to the WhatsApp app after using the API?

Yes, but not instantly. Meta's migration guide says a number registered on the Cloud API can't be used with the WhatsApp Business app again unless you deregister it from the Cloud API first. Chats from your API period live in whatever system stored them, not in the app, so export them before switching back.

Does coexistence work with a personal WhatsApp number?

No. Coexistence is Meta's onboarding path for WhatsApp Business app numbers. A number on personal WhatsApp would need moving to the Business app first, or a full migration to the Cloud API. Linked-number tools work with either app, because they connect as a linked device rather than registering the number on the platform.

Will a linked-number tool log me out of WhatsApp on my phone?

No. It's added as a linked device, like WhatsApp Web, and your phone stays the primary device with every feature intact. The tool is the one that gets logged out, if someone removes it under Linked devices or the phone goes unused for more than 14 days.

The phone question has three answers: gone, mostly kept, or untouched. Choose the one that matches how your team actually works. If untouched is the requirement, get started with Tenashi, and for the rest of the decision see our complete guide to the WhatsApp API.
