WhatsApp Backup Not Restoring? 9 Causes and Fixes

You set up WhatsApp on a new phone, or reinstalled it, and the restore screen either says no backup was found or sits at the same percentage for an hour. Every chat you care about is in that backup.

A WhatsApp backup not restoring almost always comes down to one of nine causes, and most are fixed by matching something the backup expects. Work through them in order.

First, confirm the backup exists

  • Android: open Google Drive in a browser, go to Storage, then Backups. A WhatsApp backup should be listed with its date. In WhatsApp on the old phone (if you still have it), Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup shows the last backup time and the Google account it went to.
  • iPhone: on the old phone, WhatsApp Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup shows the last backup time and size.

If there's no backup, or the date is older than you expected, the problem isn't the restore. See recover WhatsApp messages without a backup, and for single messages, how to see deleted WhatsApp messages.

The nine causes

1. A different phone number

Backups are tied to the phone number that made them. Register WhatsApp with exactly the same number, including the country code, or the backup won't be offered.

2. A different Google account or Apple ID

On Android, the phone must be signed in to the Google account the backup was saved to. On iPhone, you must be signed in to the same Apple ID, with iCloud Drive turned on. This is the most common cause of "no backup found" on a new phone.

3. iCloud Drive or WhatsApp's iCloud access is off (iPhone)

In iPhone Settings, tap your name, then iCloud. Make sure iCloud Drive is on and that WhatsApp is allowed to use it. Without that, WhatsApp can't see the backup even when it exists.

4. Not enough free space

The restore needs room on the phone for the whole backup, and media makes backups large. Free up space and try again. On iPhone, WhatsApp says you need at least about twice the backup's size free on both iCloud and the phone when making a backup, so a nearly full phone is a red flag at both ends.

5. A slow or restricted connection

Large restores can take a long time and may pause on mobile data. Connect to stable Wi-Fi, keep the phone plugged in, and leave WhatsApp open in the foreground until it finishes.

6. Switching between Android and iPhone

Google Drive backups can't be restored on an iPhone, and iCloud backups can't be restored on Android. Moving between the two uses WhatsApp's chat transfer process during setup instead, which needs the old phone. If you no longer have it, the backup can't cross over.

7. An end-to-end encrypted backup without its password

If you turned on end-to-end encrypted backups, the restore asks for your password or 64-digit key. Without it, the backup can't be opened, by you, WhatsApp, Google or Apple. See forgot your WhatsApp backup password.

8. An outdated system or app

Make sure the phone's operating system is up to date and WhatsApp is the current version from the app store. Very old versions can fail to read newer backups.

9. Restoring a local backup on Android

If you're trying to restore from a local backup file instead of Google Drive, WhatsApp needs to find it in its Databases folder, and it will prefer a Google Drive backup if one is available. Our step-by-step guide covers the local route: how to recover from a backup.

If the restore keeps failing

  • Uninstall WhatsApp, restart the phone, reinstall, and try again with Wi-Fi and plenty of space.
  • Double-check the number and account against the old phone before you start, not after.
  • Don't create a new backup on the new phone until the old one is restored. A new, empty backup can replace the one you're trying to get back.

Why one phone is a fragile record for a business

Every cause above is a way a single phone and a single account can strand a company's customer history. A business that runs its WhatsApp on one handset is one lost phone, forgotten password or wrong Google account away from losing it. We compare the two approaches in WhatsApp backups vs a shared inbox.

Where Tenashi fits

When your WhatsApp Business number is connected to Tenashi, your team works from conversations stored on our servers, not from a backup tied to one phone. A new phone, a reinstall or a failed restore doesn't erase them, and your team keeps answering customers while you sort the phone out. FAQ

Why can't WhatsApp find my backup?

Usually because the phone number, Google account or Apple ID doesn't match the one that made the backup, or because iCloud Drive is off on iPhone. Confirm the backup exists and which account it's in, then set up WhatsApp with exactly the same number and account.

Why is my WhatsApp restore stuck?

Large backups take a long time, and restores can pause on mobile data or when the phone sleeps. Use stable Wi-Fi, keep the phone charging, and leave WhatsApp open. If it still stalls, check free space, then reinstall and try again.

Can I restore a WhatsApp backup from Android to iPhone?

Not directly. Google Drive backups only restore on Android and iCloud backups only on iPhone. To move between the two, use WhatsApp's chat transfer during setup, which needs both phones.

Can I restore WhatsApp with a different phone number?

No. Backups are tied to the number that created them. If you've changed numbers, use WhatsApp's Change number feature on the old phone first, back up again, then restore with the new number.

Will reinstalling WhatsApp delete my backup?

No. Your Google Drive or iCloud backup stays where it is. But creating a new backup before restoring can overwrite it, so restore first and back up afterwards.
