Lost Your Phone? How to Get Your WhatsApp Chats Back
Losing a phone is bad. Losing every WhatsApp conversation along with it can be worse, especially if your work, your family's photos or your customers live in those chats.
The good news: if your phone is lost, stolen or broken, your WhatsApp account and, usually, your chats can be recovered. The order matters, though. Secure the account first, then recover the chats. Here's how to recover WhatsApp chats after losing your phone, step by step.
Step 1: Secure the account
Get your number back
Contact your mobile carrier, block the lost SIM, and ask for a replacement SIM with the same number. WhatsApp is tied to your number, so everything else depends on this.
Activate WhatsApp on a new phone
Install WhatsApp on a new or borrowed phone and register with your number. WhatsApp can only be active on one phone per number at a time, so registering on the new phone logs out the old one. Whoever has the lost phone can no longer use your WhatsApp there.
If you can't get a SIM quickly
Email WhatsApp support and ask them to deactivate your account. Use the subject line "Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account" and include your phone number in full international format (for example, +91 98765 43210). A deactivated account can be reactivated with your number within 30 days; after that it's deleted.
Protect what's left
- Turn on two-step verification (Settings, then Account) once you're back in, so a SIM swap alone can't take your account.
- Use your phone's find my device service to lock or erase the lost phone if you can.
- Tell close contacts, in case someone tries to use your account to ask them for money.
Step 2: Recover your chats
From a backup
While setting up WhatsApp on the new phone, WhatsApp looks for a backup:
- Android: in the Google Drive account the old phone backed up to. Sign in to that Google account on the new phone first.
- iPhone: in iCloud, under the same Apple ID, with iCloud Drive turned on.
Tap Restore and wait for it to finish on Wi-Fi. You'll get your chats back as they were at the last backup. If WhatsApp can't find it or the restore stalls, work through WhatsApp backup not restoring. If the backup is end-to-end encrypted, you'll need its password or 64-digit key; see forgot your WhatsApp backup password.
If you have no backup
Then the history that was only on the lost phone can't be restored to the new one. A few things can still help:
- A computer where WhatsApp was linked. Linked devices keep working for a while without the phone, so you may still be able to read recent chats there. Check it before you register the new phone, and copy anything important, because registering again can log linked devices out.
- The other people in your chats. They still have their copies. For important conversations, they can export the chat or forward key messages back to you.
- Photos you backed up separately. If your phone saved WhatsApp photos to Google Photos or iCloud Photos, those copies are there regardless of WhatsApp's backup.

Broken phone instead of lost?
If the phone still powers on, even with a cracked screen, you may be able to run a fresh backup or use WhatsApp's chat transfer to a new phone. If it doesn't power on, treat it like a lost phone and restore from your last backup.
When the phone was a business phone
A lost business phone is a different kind of problem. Customers keep messaging, nobody can answer, and the history of every open order is on a device you no longer have. Restoring a personal backup brings back the chats eventually, but the team is blind in the meantime.
Where Tenashi fits
When your WhatsApp Business number is connected to Tenashi, conversations are stored on our servers and your team works from a shared inbox in the browser. If the phone is lost, the history is still there for everyone. Tenashi is a linked device, and linked devices keep working for a while without the phone, so your team can usually keep replying while you get the number back. Once you register the number on a new phone, reconnect Tenashi with a quick QR scan.

FAQ
How do I recover WhatsApp chats from a lost phone?
Get a replacement SIM with the same number, install WhatsApp on a new phone, and restore from your Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) backup during setup, using the same Google account or Apple ID as the old phone. Without a backup, the old phone's history can't be restored.
How do I stop someone using my WhatsApp on a stolen phone?
Register WhatsApp with your number on another phone, which logs the old one out. If you can't get a replacement SIM quickly, email WhatsApp support with the subject "Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account" and your number in international format.
Can I get my WhatsApp messages back without a backup?
Not onto the new phone. But a computer where WhatsApp was linked may still show recent chats, and the people you were talking to still have their copies. Check linked devices before registering the new phone, since registering again can log them out.
Will my contacts know I lost my phone?
Not automatically. Your messages to them stay in their chats. If your account is deactivated, they can still see your profile for a while and may message you; those messages are delivered once you're back within 30 days.
Does deactivating WhatsApp delete my account?
Not immediately. A deactivated account can be reactivated within 30 days by registering your number on a phone. If you don't reactivate it in that time, WhatsApp deletes the account.
Secure the number first, then restore. And if the phone in question runs your business, keep your customer history off the phone.
