Deleted a Whole WhatsApp Chat by Accident? Here's What to Do
Deleting an entire chat is a different problem from a single deleted message, and the good news is it's usually more recoverable.
When you delete a chat, it's removed from your device only. The other person's copy is untouched. And crucially, your backups still contain it — which makes this one of the few WhatsApp data losses with a reliable fix.
Act before the next backup
This is the whole game, and it's time-critical.
Backups capture the current state. If a backup runs after you deleted the chat, it records the chat as absent and overwrites the one that had it.
Turn backups off right now:
- Android: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up to Google Drive → Never
- iPhone: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Auto Backup → Off
Android's automatic local backup runs around 2am. If you deleted the chat today and it's not yet 2am, you have a window. After that, your newest local file records the deletion.

Restoring on Android
Android keeps roughly seven days of dated local backups — separate from Google Drive and often more useful:
Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Databases
- Copy the whole Databases folder somewhere safe. Non-negotiable.
- Find the dated file from before the deletion, e.g.
msgstore-2026-09-14.1.db.crypt14 - Move the current
msgstore.db.crypt14aside - Rename your chosen dated file to
msgstore.db.crypt14 - Uninstall WhatsApp — do not clear data or delete the Databases folder
- Reinstall, verify the same number, accept the restore prompt

Restoring on iPhone
iCloud only, and no per-day choice — you get the last backup.
- Check the backup date: WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat Backup
- If it predates the deletion, delete WhatsApp
- Reinstall, verify the same number
- Choose Restore Chat History
If the backup ran after the deletion, this won't help.
The cost, and how to avoid it
Restoring rolls your entire WhatsApp back to the backup date. Every message in every chat since then is gone.
If you only need to read the deleted chat rather than have it back permanently, restore to a spare phone with the same number, read or export what you need, then log back in on your main device. Your current history stays intact.
If there's no usable backup
Options narrow but aren't zero:
- Ask the other person to forward the thread. Their copy is completely unaffected by your deletion — this is the easiest fix and people forget it.
- Ask them to export the chat and send you the file. WhatsApp's built-in export produces a text transcript — see exporting a WhatsApp conversation.
- Check your media folders. Photos, videos and documents from the chat are separate files and survive the chat's deletion entirely. See deleted WhatsApp photos.
- Archived, not deleted? Check Archived chats first — people delete and archive from adjacent menu positions, and archived chats look gone without being gone.
That last one resolves this surprisingly often. Check before you uninstall anything.
Why this keeps happening to businesses
A deleted business chat is worse than a deleted personal one: it's months of order history, agreed prices and delivery arrangements for a customer you'll deal with again.
And it happens for mundane reasons — clearing space, tidying, a mis-tap, a new phone set up without a restore, or an employee leaving with the handset.
The structural point is the same as everywhere else in this topic: if the only copy is on a phone, then every phone accident is a records loss.
When a number is connected to a platform that stores messages server-side on arrival, deleting a chat on the phone doesn't touch the stored history. In Tenashi the conversation stays in the inbox, searchable, with individual messages that senders deleted retained and tagged "Deleted on WhatsApp".
Scope: chats with your own connected business number, from the date you connect it.

FAQ
Can I recover a WhatsApp chat I deleted by accident?
Usually yes, if you act before the next backup runs. Turn off automatic backups immediately, then restore from a backup made before the deletion. On Android you can pick a specific day from the local Databases folder; on iPhone you get the last iCloud backup.
Does deleting a chat delete it for the other person?
No. Deleting a conversation removes it from your device only — their copy is completely unaffected. The simplest recovery is often to ask them to forward the thread or export the chat and send it to you.
What's the first thing to do after deleting a chat by mistake?
Turn off automatic backups, before anything else. Backups capture the current state, so the next one will record the chat as absent and overwrite the version that still had it. On Android that runs around 2am.
Will restoring bring back messages from other chats too?
It brings your entire WhatsApp back to the backup's date, so messages received since then across all chats are lost. Restoring to a spare phone with the same number lets you read the old history without overwriting your current one.
I deleted a chat and have no backup — is anything left?
Media files are separate from the chat and survive in your WhatsApp media folders or gallery. The other participant has an untouched copy they can forward or export. And check Archived chats — it may have been archived rather than deleted.
How do businesses avoid losing chat history this way?
By storing messages server-side so the record doesn't depend on a phone. Deleting a chat on the handset, losing the device or an employee leaving with it then has no effect on the business's conversation history.
A deleted chat is recoverable right up until the next backup runs. Turn backups off first, ask questions second. Get started.
