Does WhatsApp Notify Contacts When You Change Number?

Does WhatsApp notify contacts when you change number? Your group chats are always notified. Individual contacts are told only if you turn on Notify contacts, and then you pick All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, or a custom list. Blocked contacts aren't told your new number.

That's how WhatsApp's Change number feature works, and it's the only way to move your account to a new number. If you've already made the switch without notifying anyone, skip to the section on fixing that.

Who gets notified, at a glance

WhatsApp's help center spells out each group of people. This table sums it up.

WhoNotified?
Your group chatsYes, always, whatever you choose
Contacts, with Notify contacts onYes: All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, or Custom
Contacts, with Notify contacts offNot through this setting
Blocked contactsNo. They stay blocked and aren't told your new number

WhatsApp's pages don't describe any other message going to a contact you didn't select. They do describe a side effect: as part of the change, WhatsApp deletes the account tied to your old number, so your contacts no longer see that old number in their WhatsApp contacts lists.

What moves to the new number

Using the Change number feature carries your account across instead of starting a new one. WhatsApp lists these as transferred: your profile photo, username, display name, privacy settings, WhatsApp contacts, individual chats and group chats.

So can you change your WhatsApp number without losing chats? Yes, if you use the feature. WhatsApp says that if you change your number or put in a new SIM, you must use Change number to keep access to your account. Setting up a new account on the new number instead is a separate account: WhatsApp's blocking page, for one, says you'd have to block people again there.

How to change your number and choose who is told

Do this on the phone where WhatsApp is registered now.

  1. Put the SIM with the new number in your phone. The number needs to receive SMS texts or phone calls.
  2. Check your old number is the one currently registered on WhatsApp. On Android, tap More options > Settings, then your profile photo. On iPhone, open WhatsApp Settings or your profile.
  3. On Android, tap More options (three dots) > Settings > Account > Change number > Next. On iPhone, tap Settings (or your profile picture) > Account > Change Number > Next.
  4. Enter the old number in the first field and the new one in the second, both in full international format.
  5. Tap Next. If you switch on Notify contacts, choose All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, or Custom... and tick the people you want.
  6. Tap Done, then register the new number when prompted.

Two limits to know. You can't change your number on WhatsApp Web or the desktop app, only on your primary phone. And WhatsApp doesn't accept every kind of number: VoIP, toll-free, paid premium, universal access and personal numbers are on its unsupported list, and landlines are only accepted on the WhatsApp Business app.

Forgot to notify your contacts?

The help page doesn't offer a way to send the notification afterwards, and WhatsApp says a number change can't be reverted. If you skipped Notify contacts, tell people yourself. Your group chats already know.

One thing WhatsApp does say: only people who have added your new number to their phone's contacts will receive your broadcast message. If you plan to announce the move that way, ask customers to save the new number first.

What about backups?

Backups are tied to the number. WhatsApp says cloud backups of your chat history are linked to the phone number used when the backup was made, so after a number change, backups made with the old number can no longer be used to restore your data. Make a fresh backup right after the change.

Moving to a new phone as well? Change the number on the old phone first, create a backup that uses the new number, then install WhatsApp on the new phone, register the number and restore. We cover the recovery side in recovering WhatsApp chats after a lost phone.

Where Tenashi fits

A business moving its customer-facing number has two jobs: telling customers, and keeping past conversations where the team can still find them. WhatsApp's notice only helps with part of the first.

Tenashi connects your own existing WhatsApp number as a linked device by QR scan (see how to connect a WhatsApp number) and stores the messages that number sends and receives from the day it's connected. Several numbers can sit in one workspace. Our number connection guide explains when to use Reconnect on an existing number and when Connect another number creates a separate record, and the logged-out linked device guide covers a connection that drops. Linking any new device is one of the reasons WhatsApp gives for a security code change.

FAQ

Does WhatsApp notify contacts when you change number?

Only if you choose it. Your group chats are always notified. Individual contacts are told only when you turn on Notify contacts and pick All contacts, Contacts I have chats with, or a Custom list. Blocked contacts are never notified of your new number.

Can I change my WhatsApp number without notifying contacts?

Yes. Leave Notify contacts off when you reach that screen. Groups are still notified, because WhatsApp does that regardless of your choice. WhatsApp also deletes the account on your old number, so contacts stop seeing that number in their WhatsApp contacts lists.

Do blocked contacts get notified when you change your number?

No. WhatsApp says that if you change your number and keep the same account, blocked contacts stay blocked and aren't notified of your updated number. That holds even if you pick All contacts in the notify step.

Will I lose my chats if I change my WhatsApp number?

Not if you use the Change number feature. It transfers your profile photo, display name, privacy settings, contacts, individual chats and group chats. Old cloud backups stop being usable for restoring, though, so make a new backup after the change.

Can I change my WhatsApp number from WhatsApp Web?

No. WhatsApp says you can't change your phone number on WhatsApp Desktop or WhatsApp Web. You have to do it on your primary phone, under Settings > Account > Change number. A linked computer or any other linked device can't start the change.

Groups are always told, contacts only if you say so, and blocked contacts never. If your team needs a shared home for the conversations after the move, get started with Tenashi.
