If You Archive a WhatsApp Chat, Will They Know?

If you archive a chat on WhatsApp, will they know? WhatsApp describes archiving as hiding the chat from your own Chats tab, and its help pages mention no notice to the other person. Nothing is deleted, and their messages still reach you.

What they can still notice is your behaviour: if you don't open the chat, their messages stay on two grey ticks. This guide covers what changes for you, what happens when they message you again, and how archiving differs from muting, locking and deleting.

What archiving does

Archiving moves a one-to-one or group chat out of your main list and into an Archived section at the top of the Chats tab. The chat and its messages are still there.

WhatsApp states two things plainly. Archiving a chat doesn't delete it. And on Android, it doesn't back it up to your SD card either, so an archive isn't a safe copy.

The help center doesn't describe archiving as sending anything to the other person. Treat "they won't know" as a reading of WhatsApp's pages, not as a promise written anywhere.

What the other person can see

WhatsApp's pages describe nothing that changes on their side. They can keep sending messages, and archiving isn't on the help center's list of reasons a message doesn't turn blue (read receipts off, the chat not opened, connection problems, a first message, wrong date settings, a block).

That doesn't mean they can never tell. Their messages to you still get two grey ticks once delivered, and if you leave the chat unopened in Archived, they stay grey, because not opening the conversation is on that list. If you stop replying, they may notice the silence. The full tick rules are in what each WhatsApp tick means.

On calls, the archive page covers notifications and doesn't say anything about calls, so there's no official answer to give.

New messages and notifications

You still receive messages in an archived chat. What changes is how loudly they arrive.

  • Notifications: WhatsApp says you won't receive notifications for archived chats unless you're mentioned or replied to, and you can't adjust notifications for an archived chat.
  • Unread count: the number next to Archived shows how many chats have unread messages.
  • Mentions in groups: an @ symbol shows next to Archived when someone has replied to or mentioned you in an archived group.
  • Read status: WhatsApp doesn't describe archiving as marking anything read, and the number next to Archived counts chats with unread messages. So a new message waits there, unread, until you open the chat.

Keep chats archived: will the chat come back?

The Keep chats archived setting decides whether a new message pulls the chat back into your main list.

By default, WhatsApp says archived chats stay archived when you receive a new message. That's Keep chats archived switched on. Turn it off and a new message unarchives the chat automatically.

  • Android: tap More options (three dots) > Settings > Chats, and turn off Keep chats archived. When it's off, archived chats move to the bottom of the Chats tab.
  • iPhone: tap Settings or your profile picture, then Chats, and turn off Keep chats archived.
  • WhatsApp Web: a new message leaves the chat archived unless Keep chats archived is turned off on your phone.

How to archive and unarchive

On Android:

  1. In the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat you want to hide.
  2. Tap the Archive icon at the top of the tab.
  3. To find it again, scroll to the top of the Chats tab and tap Archived.
  4. To restore it, tap and hold the chat in Archived and tap the Unarchive icon.

On iPhone, swipe left on the chat in the Chats tab and tap Archive. Open Archived at the top of the Chats tab, swipe left on the chat and tap Unarchive.

To archive everything at once, go to Settings > Chats > Chat history > Archive all chats on Android, or Settings > Chats > Archive all chats on iPhone.

If a chat has vanished from your list and you didn't mean to hide it, check Archived first. Other causes are in why your WhatsApp chats disappeared.

Archive vs mute vs lock vs delete

All four change only your side of the chat, in different ways.

ActionWhat it does for you
ArchiveHides the chat from the Chats tab; no notifications unless you're mentioned or replied to
MuteSilences notifications for 8 hours, 1 week or Always; the contact isn't notified, and in groups mentions and replies still notify
LockMoves the chat into a locked folder; the other people aren't notified and calls still come through
DeleteCovered in does deleting a chat delete it for the other person

If you want the chat to stay in your list but stop buzzing, muting is the closer fit; if you want it behind a passcode, use chat lock. Details are in how to mute someone on WhatsApp and WhatsApp chat lock.

Where Tenashi fits

On a shared business number, an archived chat is a quiet way to lose a customer. Someone clears their phone list, the chat disappears from view, and a question sits unanswered.

When your number is connected to Tenashi, the team works conversations in Tenashi's own inbox, which doesn't read WhatsApp's archive state. A chat someone archives on the phone is still in front of the team there, where it can be assigned and followed up. Tenashi doesn't archive, show or change anything in WhatsApp's archive. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More on running a team on one number is in our guide to WhatsApp for business.

FAQ

If I archive a chat on WhatsApp, will they know?

WhatsApp describes archiving as hiding the chat from your own Chats tab, and its help pages mention no notice to the other person. Your chat with them looks the same on their side. The help center doesn't state this as a guarantee, so treat it as what the documentation describes.

If I archive a chat on WhatsApp, will I still get messages?

Yes. Archiving doesn't delete the chat or block new messages. You just won't get notifications for archived chats unless you're mentioned or replied to. Whether the chat stays archived when a new message arrives depends on the Keep chats archived setting on your phone.

Do archived WhatsApp chats show notifications?

No, not by default. WhatsApp says you won't receive notifications for archived chats unless you're mentioned or replied to, and you can't adjust notifications for them. In groups, an @ symbol shows next to Archived when you've been replied to or mentioned.

Does archiving WhatsApp chats delete them?

No. WhatsApp says archiving a chat doesn't delete it. On Android, it also doesn't back the chat up to your SD card. You can open the Archived section at the top of the Chats tab at any time and unarchive the chat.

What does Keep chats archived mean on WhatsApp?

It controls whether an archived chat stays hidden when a new message arrives. The setting is on by default, so archived chats stay archived. Turn it off under Settings, then Chats, and a new message unarchives the chat automatically. It's a phone setting that WhatsApp Web follows too.

Archiving changes your own list and, as far as the help center describes, nothing on their side. For a team that can't afford a hidden chat, get started with Tenashi.
