WhatsApp Ticks Meaning: One Tick, Two Ticks, Blue Ticks
What's the meaning of the ticks next to a WhatsApp message? One grey tick means sent, two grey ticks mean delivered, and two blue ticks mean read. A small clock means the message hasn't been sent yet, and on a voice message a blue microphone means it was played.
Each mark tells you how far the message got, and none of them tells you everything. This guide covers what each one can and can't prove, how group chats change the rules, and why blue ticks sometimes never appear.
What each tick means
Here are the marks as WhatsApp's help center defines them, side by side with what each one doesn't tell you.
| What you see | What it means | What it doesn't prove |
|---|---|---|
| Clock | Not sent yet; WhatsApp says this could be due to connectivity issues | Anything about the other person |
| One grey tick | Sent: it left your phone but hasn't reached their device | That you've been blocked |
| Two grey ticks | Delivered to their phone or one of their linked devices | That they opened the chat |
| Two blue ticks | Read | That they read it closely, or that a reply is coming |
| Blue microphone | They played your voice message | That they listened to the end |
WhatsApp says it isn't possible to change the colour of the ticks or the clock. For the detail behind them, open Message info, covered below.
One grey tick: sent, not delivered
One grey tick means the message left your phone but hasn't reached the other person's device. WhatsApp's own explanation is that their phone may be switched off, may have no internet connection, or WhatsApp may not be running on it.
Linked devices count. If their phone is off but WhatsApp Web or their desktop app is connected, the message can still be delivered there and you'll get the second tick. Only when no device of theirs has it does the message stay on one.
A message that sits on one tick for days is a different signal, and it's one of the signs people check when they wonder about a block. It isn't proof on its own, which we explain in what one grey tick means and how to know if someone blocked you.
Two grey ticks: delivered, not read
Two grey ticks mean the message arrived on their phone or a linked device, but WhatsApp hasn't reported it as read. WhatsApp lists these reasons for missing blue ticks:
- They haven't opened your conversation yet.
- You or they have turned off read receipts in privacy settings.
- One of you has a connection problem.
- WhatsApp says that "when a person gets your message for the first time, a read receipt might not be sent to you."
- The date and time settings are wrong on one of the phones.
That first-time case matters for businesses, and WhatsApp's safety page spells it out: when someone gets a first message from a number they haven't saved, their read receipt won't show to the sender until they reply or add the number as a contact, even with read receipts on. So a lead who left their number on a form can read your first message while you still see grey ticks. More on this in two grey ticks but no blue.
Two blue ticks: read, seen and played
Two blue ticks mean the recipient has read your message. For a photo, video or audio file, Message info calls it Seen. Voice messages have their own mark: a blue microphone means the voice message was played, not just seen in the chat.
One detail that's easy to miss: read receipts reset when you edit a message. If you correct a message after it turned blue, the ticks start again, so you can see who has read the new version. Editing itself works on a tight clock, which we cover in WhatsApp edited messages.
Ticks in group chats
Groups use the same marks with a stricter rule. The second tick appears only when everyone in the group has received your message, and the ticks turn blue only when everyone has read it. In a busy group, a message can stay grey for a long time because one member hasn't opened the chat.
Two more group rules:
- Read receipts in groups can't be switched off. Turning off read receipts in privacy settings doesn't affect group chats or the played status of voice messages.
- Message info keeps the original list. If someone leaves the group, the message info screen still shows everyone who was there when you sent it.
To see exactly who has read a group message, use Message info. The full walk-through, including what it shows for voice notes, is in how to see who read your message in a WhatsApp group.
How to check Message info
Message info shows when your sent message was delivered, read or played, person by person.
- Open the individual or group chat.
- Tap and hold a message you sent.
- Tap Info (the letter i in a circle). On Android you may need to tap More options (three dots) and then Info.
The screen lists Delivered (it reached their phone or linked devices but they haven't seen it), Read or Seen, and Played for voice messages. It only works on your own messages.
Why blue ticks can stay grey for good
The setting behind permanent grey ticks is read receipts, at Settings > Privacy > Read receipts (on Android, open More options first). When someone turns it off, nobody gets blue ticks from them in one-to-one chats. The catch WhatsApp builds in is that they stop seeing yours too, and they might not be able to see who views their status.
So if someone replied but your message still shows two grey ticks, they did open the chat. That leaves the other causes on WhatsApp's list: read receipts off on either side, a connection problem, a first message, or a wrong date and time. What that setting hides and what it doesn't is in WhatsApp read receipts off. And if a message never gets past the clock, see the WhatsApp clock icon.
Where Tenashi fits
On a business number, ticks have a practical job: did the customer see the quote, the payment link, the delivery slot? When the number lives on one phone, only the person holding it can check, and everyone else has to ask.
When your number is connected to Tenashi, messages your team sends from the shared inbox show WhatsApp's delivery status in the thread, and they read Seen once WhatsApp reports the customer read them. Anyone on the team can check before chasing, without picking up the phone. It covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. FAQ
What do two grey ticks mean on WhatsApp?
Two grey ticks mean your message was delivered to the other person's phone or one of their linked devices, but WhatsApp hasn't reported it as read. They may not have opened the chat yet, or read receipts may be turned off on either side. Two grey ticks are not a sign of being blocked.
Why are my WhatsApp ticks not turning blue?
Read receipts may be turned off, on your phone or theirs. Other reasons WhatsApp gives: they haven't opened the chat, one of you has a connection problem, it's a first message from a number they haven't saved, the date and time are wrong on one of the phones, or they may have blocked you. Group chats only turn blue once every member has read.
What do ticks mean in a WhatsApp group chat?
The same marks, but for everyone at once. The second grey tick appears when every member has received your message, and both ticks turn blue only when every member has read it. To see who has and hasn't, tap and hold your message and open Message info.
What does the clock icon mean on WhatsApp?
A clock means the message hasn't been sent yet, and WhatsApp says this could be due to connectivity issues. It tells you nothing about the other person. Check that Wi-Fi or mobile data is working, turn airplane mode on and off, or restart your phone and try sending it again.
What does a blue microphone mean on WhatsApp?
A blue microphone on a voice message means the recipient played it. Message info separates the two stages: Seen means they saw the voice message in the chat, and Played means they played it. Turning off read receipts doesn't hide the played status of voice messages.
The ticks answer one question each: sent, delivered, read. For a team that needs everyone to see the answer, not just the person holding the phone, get started with Tenashi.
