How to Know If Someone Blocked You on WhatsApp
How do you know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp? You can't know for sure. WhatsApp sends no alert, and its help center says: "We can't tell you if someone has blocked you, or who has blocked you."
What it does give is a list of signs: one grey tick that never becomes two, no blue ticks, no status or profile photo updates, no last seen or online, and calls that don't go through. If you see all of them for one contact, WhatsApp says this could mean they're blocking you, "but they may also be due to other reasons." This guide lists each sign, what else can cause it, and what to do next.
The signs WhatsApp lists
These are the indicators on WhatsApp's "Being blocked by someone" page. The right-hand column is what else can produce the same thing.
| Sign | What else can cause it |
|---|---|
| No blue ticks on your messages | Read receipts off on either side, they haven't opened the chat, a connection problem, or it's the first time they've received a message from you |
| Messages show one grey tick and never a second | Their phone is off or offline, or WhatsApp isn't running on it |
| You can't see their status | Their status privacy settings, or they haven't posted one. A status they posted before blocking you can still show until it expires |
| Their profile photo doesn't update | Their profile photo privacy setting, or they haven't changed it |
| You can't see their last seen or online | Their last seen and online setting, or yours, since hiding your own hides theirs from you |
| Your calls don't go through | A connection problem on either end |
| You can't add them to a group (if you're an admin) | Their group privacy setting |
Every row has an ordinary explanation, and WhatsApp itself says the signs may be due to other reasons. Read the list as a pattern, not as proof.
Why one tick matters most, and still isn't proof
WhatsApp says messages sent to someone who has blocked you only ever show one grey tick, with no second. That is the sign people check first.
But one tick is also what a message shows when it hasn't reached their device. WhatsApp's explanation: the recipient's phone may be off, have no internet connection, or WhatsApp may not be running on it. Linked devices count too, so a message that reaches their laptop gets the second tick.
When a single tick persists for an extended period, WhatsApp's troubleshooting page lists a block as one possibility, next to a phone that's off or out of coverage, a recipient who has run out of mobile data, or one who saw the notification but hasn't opened WhatsApp. For the single-tick details, read what one grey tick means. If a message you send now gets two grey ticks, it reached them, which WhatsApp says doesn't happen when you're blocked.
Can you tell without messaging them
Partly. Three signs don't need you to send anything: their status, their profile photo and their last seen or online.
Treat each with care. Last seen and online depend on their setting, and WhatsApp says that if you don't share yours you can't see theirs. A profile photo that disappeared is covered in why you can't see a WhatsApp profile picture, and a missing last seen in why last seen isn't showing. Both have non-block causes.
One missing detail says little. WhatsApp's wording is about seeing all the indicators together, and that includes a message stuck on one tick, which you can only check by sending one.
What about iPhone, calls and groups
WhatsApp's page gives one list and doesn't split it by phone, so the signs above apply on Android and iPhone alike.
On calls, the page says calls you try to place will not go through. It doesn't describe what the call screen shows, so there's no official meaning to read into a ring or a "calling" label.
On groups, being blocked doesn't remove anyone. WhatsApp says blocking someone doesn't stop them seeing your messages in a group you both belong to, and you'll see theirs. They also stay in each other's contact lists.
What not to do if you think you're blocked
Don't try to get round a block. WhatsApp's page on reporting and blocking tells people that if someone contacts them from new numbers, they can block and report each new number, so messaging from another number is a quick route to a report. For why that matters on a business line, see why WhatsApp bans numbers.
If you have a real reason to reach them, such as a shared bill or an open order, use a channel you already share outside WhatsApp, and take silence as an answer. WhatsApp also says it can't remove blocks on your behalf.
What blocking actually does from their side, including what they see, is in what happens when you block someone on WhatsApp.
If a customer may have blocked your business number
For a business, the same signs apply: WhatsApp's pages don't give a separate list for business accounts. Blocking a business asks the person to pick a reason, but the help center doesn't say what the business is shown, so don't expect to be told.
Treat a stuck single tick on a customer as a prompt to check, not a verdict. Look for other explanations, such as a switched-off phone, and try another channel. If it is a block, stop sending. Messages to someone who blocked you don't reach them, and trying other numbers invites reports.
Where Tenashi fits
On a business number used by several people, the first problem is knowing that a customer has gone quiet at all. If the only record is on one phone, nobody else sees that the last three messages never got a second tick.
When your number is connected to Tenashi, messages your team sends show WhatsApp's delivery ticks in the thread, so anyone can see that a message to a customer is still on one tick, and the activity log shows which agent sent what. Tenashi can't tell you whether a customer has blocked you, and it doesn't show a customer's last seen or online status. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. For more on running a team on one number, see our guide to WhatsApp for business.

FAQ
How can I know if someone blocked me on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp won't tell you. Its help center lists signs: no blue ticks, messages stuck on one grey tick, no status or profile photo updates, no last seen or online, and calls that don't go through. If you see all of them, it could mean a block, but they may also have other causes.
How can I know if someone blocked me on WhatsApp without messaging them?
Look at their status, profile photo and last seen or online. If none of them shows for a contact who used to share them, that's part of the pattern WhatsApp describes. Each one can also be a privacy setting, so without a message stuck on one tick it proves very little.
What does it mean when someone's WhatsApp profile picture disappears?
It can mean they blocked you, since WhatsApp lists missing profile photo updates among the signs. It can also mean they changed their profile photo privacy setting or removed their photo. A missing photo alone is not proof of a block.
How can I know if someone blocked me on WhatsApp iPhone?
The same way as on Android. WhatsApp's page gives one list of signs and doesn't separate iPhone from Android: one grey tick that never gets a second, no blue ticks, no status or profile photo updates, calls that don't go through, and no last seen or online.
Will my calls ring if someone blocked me?
WhatsApp says calls you place to someone who has blocked you won't go through. It doesn't describe what the call screen shows, so a ring or a "calling" label isn't official proof either way. A failed call alone can also come from a connection problem.
No single sign proves a block, and WhatsApp won't confirm one either way. If your team needs to see which messages are still on one tick, get started with Tenashi.
