Why Can't I See Someone's Last Seen on WhatsApp?
Why can't you see someone's last seen on WhatsApp? WhatsApp lists six possible reasons, and being blocked is only one of them. The others are your own privacy setting, their privacy setting, no chat or saved contact between you (on either side), and a temporary connection issue.
So a missing "last seen" or "online" line is not proof of anything on its own. This guide walks through the official list as a checklist, with what you can check on your own phone first, then what a block would look like when other signs line up.
The six reasons WhatsApp gives
This is the list from WhatsApp's "About last seen and online" page, with a way to check each one.
| Reason | How to check |
|---|---|
| You set your privacy settings to not share your last seen | Look at your own setting (steps below) |
| You haven't chatted with them before or saved them as a contact | Save the number, or send a message; it then shows only if their setting allows |
| You might be blocked | Look for the other signs in the blocked section |
| They set their privacy settings to hide it | You can't see their settings; ask them |
| They haven't messaged you before or saved you as a contact | Same as the second row, from their side |
| There's a temporary connection issue | Close WhatsApp and reopen it |
Start with the rows you control. The first, second and last take a minute to rule out and cost nothing.
Check your own setting first
WhatsApp builds in reciprocity: "If you don't share your last seen, you can't see other contacts' last seen." If you hid yours, everyone else's disappears too, which can look like a sudden change across several contacts.
- On Android tap More options (three dots), then Settings > Privacy. On iPhone tap Settings or your profile picture, then Privacy.
- Tap Last seen and online.
- Check which option is selected: Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody.
If it says Nobody, that's your answer. Switching to one of the other options brings the feature back for contacts who share theirs.
One contact, not everyone
When it's only one person, the setting that matters is theirs. They may have chosen Nobody, or My contacts while you aren't in their address book, or excluded you with My contacts except.... A related rule is on WhatsApp's privacy page: even with Everyone selected, only people they've called or messaged before, or saved as a contact, can see their last seen and online.
So a brand-new contact you haven't talked to can look the same as a person who hid it. After you exchange a message, it may appear, if their setting allows. You can't change their choice, and WhatsApp doesn't offer a way around it.
Online shows, last seen doesn't
Some people see "online" but never "last seen", or the reverse, and ask whether WhatsApp split the settings. The current help pages, on Android and iPhone alike, show one setting, Last seen and online, with the same four options. WhatsApp announced a control for who can see when you're online in August 2022, but today's pages don't describe sharing one without the other, so there's no official answer for that combination.
What WhatsApp does say about online: a user who is online has WhatsApp open on their device and is connected to the internet. It doesn't mean they've read your message. People online in a chat with you can also see when you're typing, which is a separate thing from last seen.
When it could mean a block
A hidden last seen is one of the indicators WhatsApp lists on its page about being blocked. The full set:
- You don't see their read confirmation (blue ticks).
- You can't see their status.
- You don't see updates to their profile photo.
- Messages show one grey check mark and never a second.
- Calls you place don't go through.
- You can't add them to a group, if you're an admin.
- You can no longer see their last seen or online.
WhatsApp's own wording: if you see all of these for a contact, "this could mean they're blocking you. But they may also be due to other reasons." It also says it can't tell you if someone has blocked you. On its own, a missing last seen says little, because five other reasons on WhatsApp's list produce it. For the whole picture, read how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp, and for what the missing photo means, why you can't see a WhatsApp profile picture.
What the other person sees
WhatsApp's help pages describe no notice to the other person when you can't see their last seen. The setting is theirs or yours, and nothing in the help center says a message goes out when it hides the line from you. How the feature works from the sharing side, including what it shows and to whom, is in WhatsApp last seen and online.
Where Tenashi fits
If your team times follow-ups around when a customer was last online, a hidden last seen leaves you guessing, and it's a poor basis for deciding when to message. Customers can hide it, and you can't see it for those who do.
A reminder you set yourself doesn't depend on anyone's privacy settings. In Tenashi, you set a follow-up reminder on the conversation for when you want to get back to the customer, and assign the chat to the agent who owns it. Tenashi doesn't show when a customer is online or last seen. It covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More on running a team on one number in our guide to WhatsApp for business. The step-by-step is in WhatsApp follow-up reminders.

FAQ
Why can't I see someone's last seen on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp lists six reasons: you hid your own last seen, you haven't chatted with or saved them, you might be blocked, they hid theirs, they haven't messaged or saved you, or there's a temporary connection issue. Only one of the six is a block, so check your settings first.
Why does WhatsApp show online but not last seen?
WhatsApp's current help pages treat last seen and online as one setting, so they don't describe sharing one without the other. Online means they have WhatsApp open and are connected to the internet right now; last seen is the last time they used WhatsApp. If something looks wrong, close and reopen WhatsApp, as WhatsApp suggests for connection issues.
Can I see someone's last seen on WhatsApp if they blocked me?
No. WhatsApp lists "you can no longer see a contact's last seen or online" among the signs of being blocked. Because hidden privacy settings and connection issues produce the same result, a missing last seen is not proof, and WhatsApp says it can't tell you whether someone blocked you.
Why is last seen not showing for only one contact?
For one contact, the causes on the list that fit are their own setting, no chat or saved number between you, or a block. Check whether you can still see their profile photo and whether your messages get a second tick before concluding anything.
Does turning off my last seen hide other people's?
Yes. WhatsApp says that if you don't share your last seen, you can't see other contacts' last seen. If you choose Nobody under Settings, Privacy, Last seen and online, everyone's last seen may seem to vanish at once, which is a sign the cause is on your side.
A missing last seen has six official explanations, and a customer who hides it is making an ordinary choice. For a team that would rather schedule the next message than guess, get started with Tenashi.
