Does WhatsApp Notify When You Screenshot?
You want to screenshot a WhatsApp chat or status, and you'd like to know if the other person will be told. Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot?
WhatsApp's help center doesn't describe any screenshot notification for chats, statuses or calls. What it does describe is screenshot blocking: profile photos can't be screenshotted, and neither can view once media. This guide goes through each surface, what WhatsApp documents, and where a screenshot still isn't a safe record.
Screenshots by surface
Here is what the help center says for each place people ask about.
| Surface | Screenshot alert documented? | Screenshot allowed? |
|---|---|---|
| Normal chat messages | No | The help center doesn't describe any block |
| Status updates | No | The help center doesn't describe any block |
| Profile photo | No (the screenshot is blocked) | No, on supported Android and iOS versions |
| View once photo or video | No (the screenshot is blocked) | No |
| Calls, including video calls | No | The help center doesn't describe any block |
"Not documented" is not the same as "never happens". We can tell you what WhatsApp's pages say, and they say nothing about an alert. We can't promise more than that.
Profile photos: blocked, both ways
WhatsApp says it blocks users from taking screenshots of profile photos, so you can't screenshot someone else's profile picture and they can't screenshot yours. It adds that blocking is enforced on supported Android and iOS versions, so only users of those devices are blocked, and you can't turn the feature off.
So if you try to screenshot a profile photo, you don't get a notification going to the owner. You get a blocked screenshot. Related reading: who viewed my WhatsApp profile picture covers the other half of that question.
Chats and statuses: no documented alert
For ordinary messages and for statuses, WhatsApp's help pages describe neither a block nor a notification. What a status poster does get is a viewer list: they can see who viewed the status when read receipts are on, as our post on who viewed my WhatsApp status explains. Opening the status puts you on that list; nothing on WhatsApp's pages says a screenshot adds anything to it.
The flip side: no alert doesn't make a message private. The other person's phone already holds a copy of everything you sent, and WhatsApp itself points out that anyone can photograph a screen with a second device.
View once: screenshots blocked, other copies not
View once photos, videos and voice messages disappear from the chat after the recipient opens them once. WhatsApp says the recipient can't take a screenshot of anything you send with view once, and you can't screenshot view once media you receive. WhatsApp announced screenshot blocking for View Once messages in August 2022.
It also warns that other copies are possible. Recipients can take a photo or video of the media with a camera or another device before it disappears, and iOS or Android users can record audio of view once messages with the native screen recorder. For the full rules, including the 14 days to open, see WhatsApp view once for business.
Calls and video calls
The help center describes no screenshot alert for calls, and nothing about blocking screenshots during a call. If you need to rely on what was said on a call, don't count on a screenshot or on any alert. Ask the other person to confirm in writing.
Why a screenshot is a weak record
For a business, a screenshot is easy to make and easy to fake, and it shows only the part of the thread that fit on the screen. A phone screenshot doesn't show who on your team said what, or whether the message was later deleted.
We go into this in WhatsApp messages as legal evidence. Forwarding is a different case from a screenshot: WhatsApp labels forwarded messages, as covered in WhatsApp forwarded many times.
Where Tenashi fits
If a customer disputes what was promised, a screenshot on one employee's phone is thin proof. A conversation kept in one place is better.
Tenashi connects your own WhatsApp number as a linked device and stores the messages that number sends and receives, from the day you connect it. Activity logs show which agent sent what, and if a customer deletes a message for everyone, Tenashi keeps it in the thread tagged Deleted on WhatsApp. Tenashi doesn't keep view once media. FAQ
Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot a chat?
WhatsApp's help center doesn't describe any screenshot notification for chats. It documents no alert and no block for ordinary messages. The only screenshot rules it describes are blocks on profile photos and on view once media.
Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot a status?
The help center describes no screenshot alert for statuses. What it does cover is who views a status, which depends on read receipts. Nothing on the pages we checked says a screenshot is reported to the person who posted the status.
Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot a profile picture?
No, because the screenshot is blocked. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of profile photos on supported Android and iOS versions, in both directions, and you can't turn the block off. Because the screenshot doesn't go through, WhatsApp describes nothing being sent to the owner.
Can you screenshot a view once photo on WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp says you can't take a screenshot of view once media you receive. It also warns that people can still photograph the screen with another device, so view once is not a guarantee against copies.
Does WhatsApp notify when you screenshot a video call?
The help center describes no screenshot notification for calls, video calls included, and no block. As with chats, that means WhatsApp documents no alert for calls. It doesn't mean a screenshot is private, and it doesn't mean the other person has agreed to one.
Screenshots aren't flagged by anything WhatsApp documents, but they're a weak record for a business. To keep the conversation itself, get started with Tenashi.
