WhatsApp Forwarded Many Times: Meaning and Limits

A message lands in your chat with a double arrow and the words "Forwarded many times". On WhatsApp that label has one specific meaning: the message has been forwarded through a chain of five or more chats before it reached you. It doesn't tell you who wrote it or whether it's true.

A plain "Forwarded" label is the milder one. It tells you the person who sent it didn't write it themselves. Both labels come with forwarding limits, and the "many times" one cuts sharing down to one chat at a time.

The two labels

WhatsApp uses two levels, and the second one adds an icon.

LabelWhat it tells youWhat changes
ForwardedThe message originally came from someone else, not the person who sent it to youShown to you and to every recipient
Forwarded many timesThe message has passed through a chain of five or more chatsShows a Frequently Forwarded icon (two overlapping right arrows) and has a tighter forwarding limit

WhatsApp's own description of the first label is that it "helps you know if your friend or family member wrote the message they sent or if the message originally came from someone else." The label doesn't name who wrote the original or where it started, and WhatsApp's help pages don't describe any way to see that.

How WhatsApp counts the chain

The count is the number of chats the message has travelled through. At five or more chats, it earns the "Forwarded many times" label.

WhatsApp states that each message carries a counter, and the counter is end-to-end encrypted. That means WhatsApp itself can't tell how many times a message has been forwarded. Only your device and the recipient's device can read it. So there is no public figure for how many times a given message has travelled beyond the five-chat threshold, and the label doesn't show a number.

The forwarding limits

The limits are the other half of the answer, and they are tighter once a message has been forwarded.

  • Ordinary forwarding: up to five people or groups at a time.
  • Already forwarded to you: up to five chats, including a maximum of one group chat, per WhatsApp's "How to forward messages" page. The separate "About forwarding limits" page states only the group half ("it can only be shared with one additional group chat"). Neither page is dated, and read together they agree on the group cap.
  • Forwarded many times: one chat at a time.
  • Broadcast lists: you can't forward a broadcast list.

WhatsApp says the limits help keep conversations "intimate and personal" and help prevent spamming and misinformation. If you want to reach many people, its advice is to create a group chat or share a link instead. For broadcast sending on a business number, see WhatsApp broadcast limits.

Can you remove the label?

No. WhatsApp's help pages describe the label as part of how forwarded messages work, and they don't offer a way to remove it. Two things are worth separating:

  • Your own messages don't carry it. The forwarding page says any message you forward that isn't your own outgoing message shows the label to you and to the recipient. So forwarding something you originally sent yourself doesn't add it.
  • Retyping is a different message. If you copy the text and send it as your own, it is new text from you. It no longer carries the label, and it also no longer tells the recipient where it came from. If the content is something you can't vouch for, don't do this.

Because the label exists to help readers judge a message, hiding it from the people you send it to defeats the point. WhatsApp offers no setting for it, and no workaround is worth recommending.

How to forward a message

  1. In a chat, tap and hold the message you want to forward. To forward several, select more after the first.
  2. On Android, tap Forward (the double arrow with a curved tail). On iPhone, tap Forward in the menu, then the forward arrow.
  3. Search for or pick the chats you want.
  4. Tap Send (the paper airplane in a circle) on Android, or Forward on iPhone.

WhatsApp says you can also forward media, locations and contacts without uploading them again. If forwarding fails and you haven't hit a limit, its troubleshooting steps are to restart your phone, update WhatsApp, update your phone, and switch between mobile data and Wi-Fi.

What to do with a forwarded message you receive

WhatsApp built the labels because forwarded content can spread misinformation, so treat the label as a prompt to check. For a business, the risky versions are a forwarded "offer", a forwarded payment screenshot or a forwarded message that claims to come from you.

Check the source in the place it was meant to come from: your bank app for a payment, your own price list for an offer. Our post on fraud prevention when messages get deleted covers the payment-proof side. If a chat is full of messages you think are abusive or fake, what happens when you report someone on WhatsApp explains what reporting sends and who is told.

Where Tenashi fits

A team that answers customers from one phone often has nothing to compare against when a customer forwards a screenshot or a "quote from your colleague". Whoever has the phone remembers; nobody else can check.

Tenashi connects your own WhatsApp number, so your team works the same chats from one shared inbox. Messages your number sends and receives are stored from the date you connect it, and you can search them, so an agent can find what was actually quoted earlier instead of trusting a forwarded copy. Tenashi doesn't show the "Forwarded" labels, so verify at the source rather than by the label. For the bigger picture, see our guide to WhatsApp for business.

FAQ

What does "Forwarded many times" mean on WhatsApp?

It means the message has been forwarded through a chain of five or more chats, according to WhatsApp's help center. WhatsApp labels it "Forwarded many times" and shows a Frequently Forwarded icon. A plain "Forwarded" label just means the sender didn't write the message themselves.

How many times is "forwarded many times" on WhatsApp?

Five or more chats in a chain. WhatsApp can't give an exact count beyond that and the label shows no number, because the forward counter is end-to-end encrypted and only your device and the recipient's device can read it.

What is the WhatsApp forward limit?

You can forward a message to up to five people or groups at a time. A message that has already been forwarded can go to up to five chats, with at most one group among them. A message labelled "Forwarded many times" can only go to one chat at a time.

How do I remove the forwarded label on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp doesn't offer a way to remove it. Any message you forward that isn't your own outgoing message shows the label to you and to the recipient. Forwarding a message you originally sent yourself doesn't add the label, and no setting hides it.

Why did WhatsApp add "Forwarded many times"?

WhatsApp says the limits keep conversations personal and help prevent spamming and misinformation. The label tells you a message has travelled far, and the one-chat limit applies to every message that carries it. WhatsApp's help pages give no other reason.

The label is a prompt to check, not proof either way. For a team that needs to check what a customer was actually told, get started with Tenashi.
