WhatsApp for Business 101

Can You See Who Viewed Your WhatsApp Profile Picture?

Can you see who viewed your WhatsApp profile picture? No. WhatsApp's help center says: "It's not possible to see who viewed your profile." There's no viewer list for your photo or your profile page.

That goes both ways. If you open someone's profile photo, they have no list that shows your visit, and WhatsApp's help pages describe no notice about it. This guide covers the apps that claim to show viewers, what you can control, and what happens if you try to screenshot a photo.

What WhatsApp shows about your profile

The answer in one place, for you and for the person on the other side.

QuestionWhat the help center says
Can you see who viewed your profile or photo? No. "It's not possible to see who viewed your profile."
Does the other person see that you looked at theirs?WhatsApp's help pages describe no viewer list and no notice
Can you screenshot someone's profile photo? Not on supported Android and iOS versions, where WhatsApp blocks it
Can they screenshot yours? The same block applies to them on those versions
Who can see your photo by default?Any user

The phrase "any user" matters more than it looks. By default your photo isn't limited to your contacts, so people you have never chatted with can open it. If you're wondering who has seen it, the only answer is that anyone allowed to see it could have, and WhatsApp gives you no record to check.

Status views are a different thing

Part of the confusion comes from Status. When you post a status, WhatsApp does show who viewed it, and that list is real. It's a separate feature from your profile photo and has its own rules, including a read receipts dependency: if you turn read receipts off, you can't see who viewed your statuses. We cover that in who viewed my WhatsApp status.

The profile photo and the profile page have no equivalent list.

Apps that say they can show profile visitors

Search for this question and you'll find apps and websites offering a "profile viewers" list. They can't do what they promise. WhatsApp says it's not possible to see who viewed your profile, so there's no viewer list in WhatsApp for any app to read.

What these apps do ask for is risky permissions on your phone, or access to your WhatsApp account itself, and they have nothing real to show in return. If you want the longer version of this warning, see are deleted-message apps safe, which covers the same trap from another angle.

If a "profile viewer" app or site asks you to scan its code from Linked devices, stop. Scanning it links that app to your account as one of your devices.

Can someone see that you screenshotted their photo?

On a supported phone, the question doesn't come up: WhatsApp blocks users from taking screenshots of profile photos, so you can't screenshot another person's picture and they can't screenshot yours. WhatsApp says the block is enforced on supported Android and iOS versions, that only users of those devices are blocked, and that you can't disable it.

Beyond profile photos, WhatsApp's help center doesn't describe any screenshot notification for chats, statuses or calls. Our post on whether WhatsApp notifies screenshots goes through what is and isn't documented.

What you can control

You can't see viewers, but you can decide who is allowed to see the photo in the first place. The options are the same four used for last seen and about.

  1. Open WhatsApp. On Android tap More options (three dots) and then Settings > Privacy. On iPhone go to Settings > Privacy.
  2. Tap Profile photo.
  3. Choose Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody.

What each option does:

  • Everyone: all users can see your profile photo.
  • My contacts: only people in your address book.
  • My contacts except...: your contacts, minus the ones you exclude.
  • Nobody: no one can see it.

Blocking someone also hides your profile photo changes from them. Someone who sees an old photo that never updates, or no photo at all, has more than one possible explanation, which we go through in why you can't see someone's WhatsApp profile picture.

A business photo is meant to be seen

If you run a WhatsApp Business account, your profile photo is your logo, and it's public by default. That's the point of it: people who hear from an unknown number can see who it is. Limiting the photo to contacts would hide it from exactly those people.

There's no extra visibility rule for businesses in WhatsApp's help pages: the same privacy settings apply to everyone you chat with. What to put in the profile itself is in how to set up a WhatsApp Business profile.

Where Tenashi fits

For a team on one business number, the useful question about your profile isn't who looked at it. It's whether the number answers promptly once someone gets in touch, and who on the team replies. A viewer count wouldn't tell you either.

Tenashi connects your own WhatsApp number as a linked device, puts its chats in a shared inbox, and lets you assign each conversation to an agent. Activity logs show which agent sent what. It covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it, and it doesn't show who has looked at your profile or status. FAQ

Can you see who viewed your WhatsApp profile?

No. WhatsApp's help center states that it's not possible to see who viewed your profile. There's no list for the profile page or the photo, and any app that claims to build one is not drawing on data WhatsApp provides.

Can someone know if I view their WhatsApp profile picture?

WhatsApp has no feature that tells a person who opened their profile photo, and its help pages describe no notice for it. Only people allowed to see the photo by their privacy settings can open it at all, which by default means any user.

Can I screenshot someone's WhatsApp profile picture?

Not on supported Android and iOS versions. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of profile photos there, in both directions, so others on those versions can't screenshot yours either. WhatsApp says only users of those devices are blocked, and the block can't be turned off.

Are apps that show who viewed my WhatsApp profile safe?

No. WhatsApp says it's not possible to see who viewed your profile, so these apps can't show a real viewer list. They ask for risky permissions or for access to your account in exchange for a list that can't be real.

How do I hide my WhatsApp profile picture?

Open Settings > Privacy > Profile photo and pick My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody. On Android, tap More options first. Nothing is hidden by default, because the default is that any user can see your photo.

WhatsApp keeps no list of who looked at your photo, so the control you have is deciding who can see it. For a team that would rather spend its attention on replies, get started with Tenashi.
