How to Recover Deleted WhatsApp Documents and PDFs
Documents are the WhatsApp attachments people need most and look for least, until the moment they need them: the signed quote, the invoice, the ID scan, the contract someone sent three weeks ago.
If a document has disappeared from a chat, because you deleted it, cleared the chat, or the sender deleted it for everyone, there are a handful of places it can still be. This guide covers how to recover deleted WhatsApp documents on Android and iPhone, in the order worth checking.
Before you start: is it really deleted?
Open the chat, tap the contact or group name, and go to Media, links and docs, then the Docs tab. Every document still in the chat is listed there, which is much faster than scrolling. If it's there, it isn't deleted.
1. The WhatsApp Documents folder (Android)
On Android, WhatsApp saves documents it downloads as ordinary files in its media folder. On current versions of Android, open your Files app and go to:
Internal storage, then Android, then media, then com.whatsapp, then WhatsApp, then Media, then WhatsApp Documents
On older phones the WhatsApp folder sits directly in internal storage. Sort by date and look for the file. Filenames are usually kept as the sender named them.
If you deleted the message yourself, this is your best chance: when you delete a chat or message, WhatsApp asks whether to delete the media too, and if you left that unticked the file may still be in the folder. If the sender deleted it for everyone, look anyway, but WhatsApp may already have removed its copy.
2. Files you saved (iPhone)
On iPhone, WhatsApp keeps documents inside the app, not in a folder you can browse. A copy exists outside WhatsApp only if you saved one: check the Files app (including Recents), and any app you opened the document in, such as Mail, a PDF reader or a cloud drive.
3. A computer where you opened it
If you use WhatsApp on a computer, documents you opened or downloaded there land in that computer's Downloads folder (or wherever your browser saves files). That copy is independent of the chat, so it stays even if the message is deleted on the phone.
4. A backup
WhatsApp backups to Google Drive or iCloud include documents along with messages. Restoring a backup taken before the document was deleted brings it back, along with every other chat as it was at that moment. Anything newer than the backup is lost, so treat it as a last resort and read how to recover from a backup first.
5. Ask the sender
Unglamorous and usually the fastest. The sender almost certainly still has the original file, and sending it again takes them seconds. If they deleted it for everyone on purpose, that's a conversation rather than a recovery problem.
What doesn't work
- WhatsApp support can't send you a document. Delivered files aren't kept on its servers. See does WhatsApp keep deleted messages.
- Recovery apps that promise to restore WhatsApp files from the server can't: the server doesn't have them. Apps that scan your phone's storage mostly find what's already in the folder above. See are deleted-message apps safe.
- Notification history shows message text, not attachments. It's useful for text, as covered in how to see deleted WhatsApp messages, but not for files.
Photos and videos instead?
The same logic applies to media, with a few differences around the gallery and camera roll. See how to see deleted WhatsApp photos and videos and, for voice notes, deleted WhatsApp voice messages.
Where Tenashi fits
Businesses receive documents on WhatsApp all day: purchase orders, payment receipts, KYC scans, signed agreements. On a phone, each one lives in a single chat on a single device, and a customer's delete for everyone can take it away.
When your WhatsApp Business number is connected to Tenashi, documents are downloaded and stored on our servers as they arrive, attached to the conversation your whole team can open. If the customer later deletes the message for everyone, the document stays, and the message is tagged Deleted on WhatsApp. It covers your own business number, from the moment it's connected.
Plans start at $18/mo. Get started.
FAQ
Where are WhatsApp documents stored on Android?
In WhatsApp's media folder: Internal storage, Android, media, com.whatsapp, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Documents. On older phones the WhatsApp folder is directly in internal storage. Open it with your phone's Files app and sort by date.
Can I recover a PDF someone deleted for everyone on WhatsApp?
Possibly. Check the WhatsApp Documents folder on Android, any copy you saved or opened elsewhere, and your computer's Downloads folder if you opened it there. A backup taken before the deletion also contains it. Otherwise, ask the sender to send it again.
Are documents included in WhatsApp backups?
Yes. Google Drive and iCloud backups include documents along with your messages. Restoring a backup taken before the document was deleted brings it back, but it also replaces your chats with that older snapshot.
Where do WhatsApp documents go on iPhone?
They stay inside the WhatsApp app unless you saved them. Check the Files app, including Recents, and any app you shared the document to. iPhone has no browsable WhatsApp documents folder like Android.
Can WhatsApp support send me a deleted document?
No. WhatsApp doesn't keep delivered files on its servers, so there's nothing for support to send. The document can only come from a device, a backup, a saved copy, or the sender.
For a one-off file, ask the sender. For a business that lives on documents sent over WhatsApp, keep them where a delete can't reach.
