WhatsApp Groups for Business

Are WhatsApp Polls Anonymous? Who Sees Your Vote

Are WhatsApp polls anonymous? Not unless the person who made the poll turned on Hide voter names. With that setting on, "WhatsApp won't show who voted for what," and everyone, the creator included, sees vote counts only. Without it, the poll results show who picked each option, so the rest of the chat can see your vote.

A channel poll works differently: followers see only how many people picked each option. This guide covers the setting, how to see and change votes, and what the creator gets notified about.

Who sees what

Poll typeWhat other people see
Chat or group poll, Hide voter names offVotes with names on the results screen
Chat or group poll, Hide voter names onVote counts only. Everyone, including the creator, sees no names
Channel poll, as a followerOnly how many people voted for each option
Channel poll, as an adminYour vote, with your profile photo (depending on your privacy settings) or the name they saved you under

WhatsApp has no line that says "polls are public". The first row follows from how it describes Hide voter names: the setting that stops WhatsApp showing who voted for what, so names show when it's off.

Hide voter names

WhatsApp announced the option on August 4, 2026, in an update to group chats that also brought poll end times and editing the question within 15 minutes. It's a choice the creator makes once, while creating the poll.

  1. Open the chat. On Android tap Attach (the paper clip) then Poll. On iPhone tap Attach (the plus sign) then Poll.
  2. Choose your poll settings: Allow multiple answers, Hide voter names, and Set an end time.
  3. Enter the question, up to 255 characters, and up to 12 options of 100 characters each.
  4. Tap Send.

WhatsApp is clear that this setting "only controls what's displayed in the poll results screen." And it's permanent: poll settings can't be changed after you create the poll. To use different settings, delete the poll and create a new one. It's a creator setting, so if you want an anonymous vote, decide before you send.

How to see who voted

Open the chat with the poll, find it and tap View votes (the same wording on Android and iPhone). That screen shows the results of an active poll, including how many members have voted. If the creator hid voter names, you'll see counts but no names, and that applies to the creator too.

You can also find an old poll without scrolling. From the Chats tab, tap the search bar and pick the Polls filter (on Android, scroll the filter options to find it).

Changing or removing your vote

You can change your vote. To remove a vote for an option, tap the option again. Whether you can pick more than one depends on the creator: Allow multiple answers is on by default, and if it's switched off, tapping an option deselects any you tapped before.

So in a poll with multiple answers on, "changing" a vote means tapping the old option off and a new one on. In a single-answer poll, tapping a new option moves your vote. If the creator set an end time, voting closes at that time.

Who gets notified

The creator is the one who hears about votes. WhatsApp says to make sure push notifications for WhatsApp are enabled to receive updates on incoming votes, and a 2023 update added notifications when people vote on your polls. On WhatsApp Web, you receive one push notification for each poll you create. WhatsApp's help pages don't describe a notification to other members when someone votes or changes a vote.

The creator can also edit the poll question within 15 minutes of creating it, and can delete the poll, for everyone or just for themselves. Reactions behave differently from votes, and we cover them in removing a reaction on WhatsApp.

Channel polls

In a channel, votes are more private. WhatsApp says people viewing or following a channel can only see how many people voted for each option, and its channel privacy page adds that other followers can't see how you vote. The exception is admins. They may see your profile photo next to your vote, depending on your privacy settings, and if an admin has saved you as a contact they see the name they gave you. WhatsApp's channel privacy page also says admins can see your profile name and how you interact with their content. What admins can see about followers more broadly is in whether a channel admin can see followers, and the difference between channels, groups and communities is in community vs group.

Where Tenashi fits

Say you ask a customer group which delivery slot they prefer. If the poll shows names, every customer sees every other customer's choice, and that's worth knowing before you send it. For anything personal, turn on Hide voter names, or ask people to reply to you directly.

Tenashi puts the groups on your own connected number in one shared inbox, so a teammate can read and reply in them. It shows the poll question people send, but not the votes or results, so you read those on the phone. It doesn't send polls. It covers your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More on running groups is in our guide to WhatsApp groups for business, and the setup for admins is in managing WhatsApp groups.

FAQ

Are WhatsApp polls anonymous?

Not by default. In chats and groups, the results show who voted for what unless the creator turned on Hide voter names when creating the poll. With it on, everyone, including the creator, sees vote counts but no names. In channels, followers only ever see counts.

Can you see who voted on a WhatsApp poll?

Yes, unless the creator hid voter names. Open the chat, find the poll and tap View votes to see the results and who voted. If Hide voter names was on, WhatsApp shows counts only, and that includes the person who made the poll.

Can I make a WhatsApp poll anonymous?

Yes. Turn on Hide voter names when you create the poll, under the poll settings. You can't change the settings once the poll is sent. To change them, delete the poll and create a new one with the settings you want.

Can you change your vote on a WhatsApp poll?

Yes. To remove a vote for an option, tap the option again, then tap a different one. If the creator switched off multiple answers, tapping a new option deselects the one you picked before. A poll with an end time stops accepting votes at that time.

Can you pick more than one answer in a WhatsApp poll?

Yes, by default. Allow multiple answers is on when a poll is created, so voters can choose several options. The creator can switch it off to limit each person to one vote, and they can't change that after sending the poll.

A poll is only as private as the setting chosen when it's created, so choose before you send. For a team that handles customer groups from one shared inbox, get started with Tenashi.
