Can New Members See Old Messages in a WhatsApp Group?

You're adding someone to a WhatsApp group and wondering whether they'll be able to scroll back through what was said before they arrived, the old messages included.

New members don't get the earlier chat automatically. WhatsApp's help center describes message history as something an existing member chooses to send, either when adding the person or just after they join. When it's sent, the new member gets a notification and everyone in the group sees a system message about it. The cap is 100 recent messages, plus any pinned messages.

How a new member gets earlier messages

WhatsApp calls the feature Send message history. Without it, the help center gives no other way for a person who joins later to see the older conversation. Here's when it can be sent:

WhenWhat happens
When you add the memberA Message history switch appears on the add screen, with an optional choice of how many recent messages to send
After they joinWorks for people added earlier and for people who joined by invite link
Invite link joinsGroup members see an in-chat option, Send message history

Admins can always send it. Other members can when admins have let any member add people and haven't switched Send message history off.

How to send message history

The steps on Android, from WhatsApp's help page:

  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name.
  2. Tap Add, then search for or select the contacts or phone number to add.
  3. Make sure Message history is turned on.
  4. Optional: choose how many recent messages to send.
  5. Tap Add members, then Continue.

On iPhone the steps are the same, with one extra tap: after picking the number of messages, tap Done, then Add members.

For someone who has already joined, open the group chat, search for the member and follow the same route. For someone who joined by invite link, tap Send message history in the chat, optionally pick the number of messages, then tap Send.

How many messages can you send

Up to 100. WhatsApp's page on adding group members says you can send up to 100 messages from the last 14 days, and the February 19, 2026 launch post put the choice at 25 up to 100. The step-by-step page only says you pick the number, so the options on your phone are the final word, but nothing official goes above 100.

On October 29, 2026, WhatsApp's blog added that you can now also send someone recent messages after they've joined a group, not only while adding them.

What the new member and the group see

  • The new member receives a notification when message history is sent.
  • Everyone in the group sees a system message saying message history was sent to the new member. You can't send it quietly.
  • The sender carries the report risk. WhatsApp's blocking and reporting page says that if someone you sent message history to reports content in it, you'll be reported, not the original sender of the message.

Keep that in mind before you send a run of messages that contain customer details or anything sensitive. The shared history stays end-to-end encrypted, according to the launch post.

Pinned messages

WhatsApp's help page says message history can include all pinned messages, which you can send alongside the recent messages. Without history, the pin page says users can't see a pinned message if they join a group after it was pinned. Details on pins are in how to pin a message on WhatsApp.

Can admins stop it

Yes. Group admins can turn Send message history off, if they've allowed members to add others. The path on Android is to tap the group name, then Group permissions, then turn Send message history on or off. When it's off, members won't see the option when they add someone. For other admin controls, see only admins can send messages and, if someone needs to go, how to remove someone from a WhatsApp group.

Communities

WhatsApp's pages we checked don't say whether message history works differently in a community's groups, so we can't say. If the group is large, remember the member limit explained in WhatsApp group size limit.

Where Tenashi fits

Adding a new salesperson or support agent to a customer group raises the question of how they catch up. On WhatsApp, someone has to send them message history, capped at 100 messages and announced to the whole group.

When your number is connected to Tenashi, the new teammate doesn't need to join the group at all to catch up. Added to the workspace, they can open the group's thread in the shared inbox with the messages your number has sent and received there since the day you connected it. Tenashi can add members to a WhatsApp group, but it doesn't send WhatsApp message history. You can also assign a chat to the new agent and leave internal notes. FAQ

Can new members see old messages in a WhatsApp group?

Not by default. A new member starts without the earlier chat unless a member sends message history, either when adding them or after they join. They get a notification, and the whole group sees a system message saying history was sent.

How do I let new members see old messages in a WhatsApp group?

When you add them, keep the Message history switch on and pick how many recent messages to send. For someone who already joined, open the group, search for the member, and follow the same steps. Invite-link joiners prompt an in-chat Send message history option.

How many messages can I send to a new WhatsApp group member?

Up to 100. WhatsApp's help page on adding members says up to 100 messages from the last 14 days, and its February 2026 launch post says you choose from 25 up to 100. All pinned messages can be sent as well. The new member is notified, and the group sees a system message.

Can new members see pinned messages in a WhatsApp group?

Only if message history is sent. WhatsApp says users can't see a pinned message if they join the group after it was pinned, but when you send message history you can include all pinned messages.

Can admins turn off message history in a WhatsApp group?

Yes. In Group info, tap Group permissions and turn Send message history off. Members then won't see the option when they add someone. WhatsApp describes this as an admin choice for groups where members are allowed to add others.
