If You Remove Someone From a WhatsApp Group, Do They Know?
If you remove someone from a WhatsApp group, will they know? They'll see it the next time they open the group, because WhatsApp shows a removed person "You can't send messages to this group." What WhatsApp doesn't document is a push notification or a message telling them or the rest of the group about the removal.
What the help center does document is a visible trace for everyone else: the removed person's profile name and phone number go into the group's Past members list, where any member can see them for up to 60 days.
What the removed person sees
They see a notice in the group itself. WhatsApp's troubleshooting page for group messages tells people who can't send to check whether they've been removed, and says that if they were, they'll see "You can't send messages to this group."
The same help pages say nothing about a separate alert. So there are two things we can't state as fact:
- Whether the removed person's phone shows a push notification at the moment of removal.
- Whether the other members see a system message such as "X removed Y" in the chat.
WhatsApp's pages for removing members don't describe either one, so we leave them out. If it matters in your situation, plan on the person finding out, because the group itself tells them they can't send.
What they keep and what they lose
The help center's page on removing members and deleting groups says removing a member doesn't delete the group on other people's devices. Other members still see the group in their chats and see all previous content unless they delete it themselves, but no one will be able to send messages.
That sentence is about the group on "other members' devices". It doesn't say what a removed person keeps on their own phone, so the table below leaves that open:
| Question | What WhatsApp says |
|---|---|
| Can the removed person send messages? | No. They see "You can't send messages to this group." |
| Does their name stay visible? | Yes, in Past members in Group info, with their profile name and phone number. Their photo may also show, depending on their settings |
| For how long? | Group members can see it for up to 60 days |
| Do other members lose the old messages? | No. The group and its content stay on their devices unless they delete it |
| Does the removed person keep the old messages? | Not stated for them specifically, so don't promise either way |
The Past members list is the one visible trace. Anyone in the group can look at it, so removal isn't invisible to the rest of the group even if no system message appears.
Who can remove someone
Only group admins can remove members. WhatsApp's page on adding and removing members says admins can add or remove members, and can also allow other members to add people. Removing isn't something a regular member can be given permission to do through that setting.
To remove someone:
- Open the group chat and tap the group name. Or, from the Chats tab: on Android, tap and hold the group, then More options > Group info; on iPhone, swipe the group left, then More > Group Info.
- Tap the member you want to remove.
- On Android, tap Remove [name] > OK. On iPhone, tap Remove from Group > Remove.
If you only want to stop one person writing, there's a softer option. Admins can restrict who sends messages, which we cover in only admins can send messages in WhatsApp.
Can a removed person rejoin?
They need an admin to bring them back. WhatsApp's page on rejoining a group says that to rejoin a group you've left or deleted, you need to ask the group admin to re-invite you. In some cases, if the admin has allowed it in settings, other members can re-invite.
That page is written for people who left, not people who were removed, so treat it as the nearest official answer rather than a ruling on removal. One more rule from the same page: leaving a group twice means a wait of 24 hours before anyone can re-invite you, and the wait grows each time up to a maximum of 81 days. An admin or another member can skip the wait by sharing a group invite link.
If you add someone back, the new-member rules apply as normal. We explain what a returning or new member can see in whether new members can see old messages in a WhatsApp group.
Removing vs leaving
The two actions look similar from outside but notify differently. When a member leaves, WhatsApp says only the group admins see "X left." in the group, and that you can't switch that off. Their name and number then appear in Past members for up to 60 days, the same as for a removal.
For the member's side of it, see if you leave a WhatsApp group, will they know. Group size caps still apply when you re-add people: a group holds up to 1024 members, covered in the WhatsApp group size limit.
Where Tenashi fits
On a business number, removal is a routine job: a staff member leaves, or a customer who joined a delivery group no longer needs it. When the number sits on one phone, only the person holding it can do the clean-up.
When your number is connected to Tenashi, the team can work in the groups that number is in from the shared inbox, and add or remove members and promote or demote admins from the workspace. WhatsApp's own rule still applies: removing needs admin rights in that group. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More on running groups for a business is in our guide to WhatsApp groups for business, and the member side is in WhatsApp group members management.

FAQ
If I remove someone from a WhatsApp group, will they know?
They'll see "You can't send messages to this group." when they open it, so they'll find out. WhatsApp's help pages don't describe a push notification sent to them at the moment of removal, so we can't confirm one. Their name and number also stay in the Past members list.
Will other group members know I removed someone?
WhatsApp's help pages don't say other members get a removal message, so we can't confirm one. What is documented is the Past members list in Group info, where the removed person's profile name and number show for up to 60 days, and any member can look.
Can a removed person still see the messages in the group?
The help center says other members keep seeing the group and its previous content on their own devices. It doesn't say explicitly what the removed person keeps on their phone, so we can't promise either way. What's certain is they can't send messages.
Who can remove someone from a WhatsApp group?
Only group admins. Open the group, tap the group name, tap the member, then tap Remove on Android or Remove from Group on iPhone. Admins can let other members add people, but removing members is an admin action.
Can I add someone back after removing them?
Yes, an admin can invite them again. WhatsApp's rejoin page says you need the group admin to re-invite you, and other members can too if the admin allows it. If someone has left twice there is a wait of 24 hours, which an invite link skips.
Removing a member is quick, but the Past members list means it isn't silent. If your team manages customer groups from one place, get started with Tenashi.
