Only Admins Can Send Messages on WhatsApp: Why and How
"Only admins can send messages" on WhatsApp means a group admin turned off the Send new messages setting, so members can read the group but only admins can post. WhatsApp shows that notice at the bottom of the group chat in place of a way to type. Nothing is wrong with your phone.
In a community, the announcement group works this way by design. If the group isn't set to admin-only and you still can't post, there are a few other causes, covered further down.
What the setting does
WhatsApp puts the control under group permissions. Its wording is simple: when Send new messages is turned on, all members can send messages in the group. When it's turned off, only admins can.
What members lose is the ability to send messages. Nobody is removed and nobody is blocked, and the group stays in their chat list.
| Send new messages | Who can post |
|---|---|
| On | All members |
| Off | Admins only |
Only a group admin can change it. If you're a member and want to post, WhatsApp's advice is to contact the group admin to request messaging permissions. You can message an admin by tapping Group info and then the admin's name.
How to turn it on or off as an admin
- Open the group chat, then tap the group name.
- Tap Group permissions.
- Turn Send new messages off to make the group admin-only, or on to let everyone post.
That's the path on Android and iPhone per the help center. WhatsApp's page calls it "Send new messages" today, so you may see older articles using different labels.
The other group permissions
The same screen holds other settings you may want to set alongside it. They're independent switches, so you choose each one:
- Edit group settings: when on, members can change the group name, icon and description. When off, only admins can. In groups with more than 256 members, WhatsApp says this defaults to Only admins.
- Add other members: by default all members can add people. Turn it off and only admins can.
- Invite via group link or QR code: by default, members of groups under 33 people can share the link. Turn it off to keep invites with admins.
- Approve new members: off by default. When on, admins must approve anyone who wants to join, and people asking to join see "An admin must approve your request".
- Send message history: lets members who add someone also send recent messages.
For a tightly controlled group, an admin can combine Send new messages off with Approve new members on. That's a choice, not a default.
Community announcement groups
A WhatsApp community comes with an announcement group by default. All community members are in it, and WhatsApp says only admins can send messages there. Members also can't leave the announcement group without leaving the community.
If you see "only admins can send messages" in a community, that's the announcement group working as intended. The other groups inside the community follow their own permissions. We compare the two formats in WhatsApp community vs group.
Other reasons you can't send in a group
If the group isn't admin-only, check these:
- You were removed. WhatsApp says a removed member sees "You can't send messages to this group." That's a different notice from the admin-only one. We cover that side in removing someone from a WhatsApp group.
- You left. Leaving takes you out of the group. To rejoin, WhatsApp says you ask an admin to re-invite you, or, if the admin allows it in settings, another member.
- Connection trouble. If other chats fail to send too, that's a network or app issue, not a group setting.
WhatsApp's help page tells you to confirm you haven't been removed if you're only missing messages from one group.
Who sees the change
Every member sees the result: WhatsApp's troubleshooting page tells people who can't type in a group to look for a notice at the bottom of the chat saying "Only admins can send messages." Its pages don't describe a separate system message announcing the moment an admin flips the switch, so don't count on one.
Why businesses use admin-only groups
A shop or clinic may run a group for customers to receive offers, delivery alerts or timings, where replies from hundreds of people would bury the useful posts. Admin-only keeps the group readable. The cost is that customers who want to answer have to do it in a private chat, so someone has to watch those chats. A set of written ground rules helps either way, and WhatsApp group rules has examples. If you only need one-way messages to many people and don't need them to see each other, compare it with broadcast vs group.
Where Tenashi fits
An admin-only group still creates work: someone has to post the updates, and someone has to answer the customers who reply privately. When the number is on one phone, that falls to whoever owns the phone.
Connect the number to Tenashi and the team works the groups that number is already in from one inbox: read them, post in them where the group lets the number post, and add or remove members or promote admins where the number is an admin. Private replies from customers land in the same shared inbox, where you can assign them to an agent. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. FAQ
What does only admins can send messages mean in a WhatsApp group?
It means a group admin turned off Send new messages in Group permissions. Members can still read everything, but only admins can post. It isn't a block or a removal. To post, you ask an admin to turn the setting back on or to post for you.
How do I make only admins send messages in a WhatsApp group?
Open the group, tap the group name, tap Group permissions, and turn off Send new messages. When it's off, only admins can send messages in the group. Turn it on again to let every member post. Only admins can change this setting.
Why can't I send messages in a WhatsApp group?
The group may be admin-only, or you may have been removed, in which case WhatsApp shows "You can't send messages to this group." If you left, you can't post until an admin invites you back. If every chat fails to send, check your connection.
Can only admins send messages in a WhatsApp community?
Yes. Every community has an announcement group by default, and WhatsApp says only admins can send messages there. All community members are part of it. The other groups in the community have their own permissions, which their admins set.
Who can change the only admins setting on WhatsApp?
Only group admins. The switch is Send new messages, under Group permissions, which admins reach by tapping the group name. If you're a member, WhatsApp suggests contacting the group admin to ask for messaging permissions. You can find and message an admin from Group info.
