WhatsApp Community vs Group: What's the Difference?
You've been invited to a WhatsApp community, or you're weighing community vs group for something you're about to set up, and you want to know what a community adds.
A group is one chat about one topic. A community is a container that holds several groups, plus an announcement group where only admins can post. WhatsApp's help center describes a community as a unified space for multiple groups, each with its own topic. The practical differences are size, who can post where, and the fact that leaving one can pull you out of the other.
Group vs community at a glance
Here is the comparison, using the numbers WhatsApp's help pages give today. A channel is in the table because people often confuse it with both.
| Group | Community | Channel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | One chat on one topic | Several groups under one umbrella | A one-way updates feed |
| Size limit | Up to 1024 members | Up to 100 groups and 2,000 members in total | An unlimited audience, per WhatsApp |
| Who can post | Everyone, unless admins restrict it | Only admins in the announcement group; members chat in the groups | Admins only; followers can't reply directly |
| Announcement group | No | Yes, created by default | Not applicable |
The 2,000 figure counts members across the sub-groups and the announcement group together, so a community can't hold more people than that even if each group has room. A community can have up to 20 admins.
What the announcement group does
Once a community exists, it gets an announcement group by default. Every community member is in it, and only admins can send messages there.
Members aren't silent, though. WhatsApp lists what a member can do in the announcement group: reply and react to an announcement, vote in and react to polls, view the number of community members, report an admin announcement, and mute notifications. Everyone can see the total number of members in the member list, but only admins can see who they are.
That makes the announcement group the right place for news that must reach everybody, while the smaller groups handle the actual conversations. If you want to know how to stop members posting in a normal group instead, see only admins can send messages in WhatsApp.
Who sees your phone number
In a normal group, WhatsApp says it's not currently possible to hide members' phone numbers. Communities add some rules on top:
- Community admins can see every member.
- Members can see the numbers of people in the groups they belong to.
- WhatsApp's own community guidance warns against @mentioning a member in the announcement group, because that exposes the person's number to the whole community.
If number privacy matters to your members, read how phone numbers show in WhatsApp groups before you set one up.
What happens when you leave
Leaving a community also takes you out of every group of that community that you are in. WhatsApp's help pages put it three ways:
- The page on exiting a community: when you leave a community, you leave all the groups you're in that are part of it.
- The page on exiting a group as a member: if the group is part of a community, you'll also exit the community and any groups in it.
- The announcement group page: you can't leave the announcement group alone. Leaving it exits you from the community.
So the answer to "can I leave a community without leaving the group" is no, according to those pages. If you want the community out of your chats list but still want its groups, WhatsApp suggests archiving instead.
The community creator can't simply leave. They have to deactivate the community first.
As for who is told: WhatsApp's pages say that when you exit a group, only group admins see the "left" notice, and other members can still find you in the Past members list for up to 60 days. For leaving a community, we couldn't find an official page that says who is notified, so we won't guess. The full group rules are in if you leave a WhatsApp group, will they know.
How to leave a community
- Open the Communities tab.
- Tap the community you want to leave.
- Tap the menu, then Community info, then Exit community.
- Pick Exit community to keep your chat history, or Exit and delete for me to remove the community from your Chats tab.
Exit and delete means you lose access to the groups you were in, and all community chats are deleted from your device.
Which one fits a business
Use a plain group when a small set of people talk to each other, such as one customer account or one event. Use a community when you run several groups around one organisation and want a single place to announce things to all of them. Use a channel when you only want to broadcast and don't want members to see each other.
One limit to know: WhatsApp says you can't currently create a community on the WhatsApp Business app. You can still own one there if ownership was transferred to you from the regular app, or if you created it on the regular app and later registered that number as a business. For a comparison with sending one message to many people, see broadcast list vs group.
Where Tenashi fits
Once a business runs several customer or partner groups, the work piles up on one phone: every group's messages land there, and only whoever holds it sees them.
When your number is connected to Tenashi, the groups that number is in appear next to your one-to-one chats in a shared inbox. Your team can read and reply, assign a chat to an agent, and leave internal notes the group never sees. Tenashi can also create groups, add or remove members and promote admins. It covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it, and we don't offer community admin tools. FAQ
What is a WhatsApp community?
A WhatsApp community is a space that brings several groups together under one structure, with each group keeping its own topic. Every community has an announcement group by default, which all members are in and where only admins can post. It can hold up to 100 groups and 2,000 members in total.
What is the difference between a WhatsApp group and a community?
A group is a single chat for one topic with up to 1024 members. A community is a container for several groups plus an announcement group. Admins use the announcement group to reach everyone, while members talk inside the smaller groups.
Can I leave a WhatsApp community without leaving the group?
No. WhatsApp's help pages say that leaving a community also removes you from the groups you're in that belong to it, and leaving a community group exits you from the community. If you only want it out of sight, WhatsApp suggests archiving the group.
If I leave a WhatsApp community, will others know?
WhatsApp's pages say that when you exit a group, only admins see the "left" message. We couldn't find an official page saying who is notified when you leave a community, so we can't say. Your name and number can stay in the Past members list for up to 60 days.
How many groups can a WhatsApp community have?
Up to 100 groups, according to WhatsApp's help center page on creating a community. The community as a whole can have up to 2,000 members, counting the sub-groups and the announcement group, and up to 20 admins. An older WhatsApp page mentions 50 groups, but it looks out of date.
