Can WhatsApp Group Members See Your Phone Number?
You've been added to a group, or you're about to start one, and you want to know whether the other members can see your phone number. Is there a way to hide your phone number in a WhatsApp group?
No setting hides your number in a regular group, and every member can see it. WhatsApp's privacy page says it plainly: at this time, it's not possible to hide group members' phone numbers in a group. Numbers stay out of sight only in other formats (channels and a community's announcement group) and, for people who get it, with a username, which WhatsApp is still rolling out.
Regular groups: numbers are visible
Every member of a regular group can see your number, and there's no switch to change that. WhatsApp's privacy page goes further than groups: it says there is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp, and your number is visible even to people who haven't saved it. The privacy settings you can change (last seen and online, profile photo, about, links, status, and who can add you to groups) don't include your number. The username pages below are the one place WhatsApp describes an exception.
What you can control is who can add you to groups at all: WhatsApp's privacy settings page lists a group privacy setting for that. It decides whether you end up in a group in the first place, not what members of one see. The related admin rules are in WhatsApp group rules.
If you're already in a group and don't want your number there, the documented option is to leave it. Admins see "X left" in the chat, and group members can see your profile name and phone number in the Past members list for up to 60 days after you leave.
Communities: the announcement group
A community has an announcement group where only admins post. WhatsApp's page on community announcements says everyone can see the total number of members in the announcement group, and admins can see who the members are. So in the announcement group, regular members see a count, not a list of numbers.
That isn't the same as your number being hidden across the community. WhatsApp's community guidance says a member's contact number is visible to all community admins and to all the members of the groups they belong to. And it warns against @mentioning a member in the announcement group, since that exposes the person's phone number to the entire community. Differences between the two formats are in WhatsApp community vs group.
Channels: followers stay hidden
Channels are the format built for it. WhatsApp's privacy page for channels says other followers can't see your name, phone number, profile picture, reactions, or how you vote on polls. Your contacts can't see which channels you follow either.
Admins are the exception. They can see your profile name and, depending on your profile settings, your profile photo and how you interact. Admins who are also your contacts can see all parts of your profile, including your full phone number. We go through it in what a channel admin can see about followers.
Usernames: still rolling out
A username is the only feature WhatsApp describes as hiding your number inside group chats. Its help page says that with a username, people who don't have your number saved see your username instead by default, including when you take part in group chats. Creating one also removes your number from existing conversations with people who don't have it saved. People who already have your number saved keep seeing it.
Two limits apply. WhatsApp says usernames are rolling out gradually and might not be available to you yet, though you can reserve one (its reservation post puts the path at Settings > Account > Username). And a phone number is still required for your account, and people can still contact you by it if they have it.
Because the rollout is gradual, don't assume a username protects you in a given group today. Check whether the option appears in your app before promising a customer anything.
What to do if you run a customer group
If you're an admin, every customer you add can see every other customer's number. Some practical choices, none of which hides numbers inside a normal group:
- Don't put customers who don't know each other in one group.
- For one-way updates, use a channel or a community announcement group, where regular members see a count rather than a list.
- For messages to many people who shouldn't see each other, send to them individually or use a broadcast. We compare the options in broadcast vs group.
Where Tenashi fits
Putting strangers in one customer group hands each of them everyone else's number. For updates that go to many people who don't know each other, a group is the wrong tool.
With your number connected to Tenashi, the Growth plan sends broadcasts from the shared number, paced rather than fired all at once, so each customer gets the update without a group listing everyone's number. Your team replies from one inbox with notes and assignments. This covers your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. Tenashi doesn't hide numbers inside a regular group, since WhatsApp doesn't allow it. For more, read our guide to WhatsApp groups for business.

FAQ
Can WhatsApp group members see my phone number?
Yes. WhatsApp says that at this time it's not possible to hide group members' phone numbers in a group. Every member of a regular group can see yours. A username can change that for people who don't have your number saved, but usernames are rolling out gradually.
Can I hide my phone number in a WhatsApp group?
Not with any privacy setting. The options are indirect: use a username once it's available to you, or choose a channel or announcement group instead of a regular group. You can also change who can add you to groups in WhatsApp's group privacy setting.
Can WhatsApp community members see my number?
It depends where. In the announcement group, members see only the member count, and admins see who the members are. WhatsApp's community guidance says a member's number is visible to all community admins and to members of the groups they belong to.
Do WhatsApp usernames hide my number in groups?
They're meant to. WhatsApp says people who don't have your number saved see your username instead, including in group chats. Usernames are rolling out gradually and might not be available to you yet, and people who have your number saved still see it.
Can channel followers see my phone number?
No. WhatsApp says other followers can't see your name or phone number, and your contacts can't see which channels you follow. Channel admins can see your profile name, and an admin who is also your contact can see your full number.
In a regular WhatsApp group, your number is visible to every member, and only channels, announcement groups and usernames change that. To send customer updates without exposing numbers, get started with Tenashi.
