Can WhatsApp Channel Admins See Their Followers?

You follow a WhatsApp channel, or you run one, and you want to know how much of you the admin can see.

Yes, but an admin who isn't your contact sees only limited details about you as a follower: your profile name and, depending on your profile settings, your profile photo and how you interact with their content. Admins who are also your contacts can see your full profile, including your phone number. Other followers can't see you at all.

What admins can see about you

WhatsApp's page on channel safety and privacy lists what a channel admin may see about a follower:

DetailAdmin who is not your contactAdmin who is your contact
Profile nameYesYes
Profile photoDepends on your profile settingsYes
Phone numberNot listed; admins who aren't contacts see only limited informationFull phone number
How you interact with their contentDepends on your profile settingsDepends on your profile settings

The wording on the help page is that admins who aren't contacts see limited information, while admins who are contacts can see all parts of your profile, such as name, full phone number and photo. WhatsApp also says admins can view a follower list that shows which followers are contacts, and an owner can tap someone in that list to invite them as an admin.

What other followers can see

Nothing about you. WhatsApp says you aren't visible to people viewing a channel, including other followers. They can't see your name, phone number, profile picture, your reactions, or how you vote on polls.

WhatsApp's 2023 launch post for channels made the same promise: following a channel won't reveal your phone number to the admin or other followers. A later post added that who you choose to follow isn't visible to other followers.

Can your contacts see which channels you follow

No. According to the help page, your contacts can't see which channels you follow or how you interact with channel content. The exception is a contact who is an admin of a channel you follow, because that admin can see your follower details as described above.

Reactions, votes and "who read it"

Followers can't reply to channel updates or message the admins. They can only add emoji reactions or vote on polls, so those are the interactions an admin sees.

  • Reactions: admins get reaction details, meaning the number and type of emoji. Followers see a total count, and WhatsApp's 2023 post says how you react isn't shown to other followers.
  • Poll votes: other followers see only how many people voted for each option. Admins get poll vote results and, WhatsApp says, may see limited profile information next to your vote: your profile photo, depending on your privacy settings, and the name they saved for you if you're in their contacts. So don't treat a channel vote as anonymous to the admin. See are WhatsApp polls anonymous for chat polls.
  • Who has read a message: WhatsApp's pages list channel metrics such as accounts reached, top regions, follows and unfollows and the number of followers. They don't describe a per-person list of who read an update, so we can't say an admin sees one.

One more privacy note

Channels aren't the same as private chats. WhatsApp's launch post says channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default, and that channel history is stored on its servers for up to 30 days. Your personal chats and calls keep their usual end-to-end encryption.

If you become an admin yourself, the rules flip: you're visible to the other admins of that channel, even if they aren't your contacts. And when you invite someone to be an admin, they can see your phone number, because the invitation arrives as a chat message from your personal account.

How a channel differs from a group

A channel is a one-way broadcast to an unlimited audience, and followers can't see each other. A group is a conversation where members can see each other's names and numbers. A community is a set of groups under one announcement group. The differences are laid out in WhatsApp community vs group, and broadcast list vs group covers the third option. For number visibility in groups, see phone numbers in WhatsApp groups.

Where Tenashi fits

A channel is good for news that goes one way: new stock, offers, announcements. But followers can't reply to a channel, so the conversations it starts happen somewhere else, such as a message to your business number.

Channels aren't part of the Tenashi inbox at all. What Tenashi does handle is those conversations: when a follower messages your connected number, the chat lands in the shared inbox, where your team can assign it, leave internal notes and keep a contact profile with labels and deals. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More on running a team on one number in our guide to WhatsApp for business.

FAQ

Can a WhatsApp channel admin see who follows the channel?

Yes, with limits. An admin who isn't your contact sees your profile name and, depending on your profile settings, your photo and how you interact with their content. Admins who are also your contacts can see your full profile, including your phone number.

Can a WhatsApp channel admin see my number?

Only if they are already your contact. WhatsApp says admins who aren't contacts see limited information, and its launch post says following a channel won't reveal your phone number to the admin. Admins who are your contacts can see your full phone number.

Can WhatsApp channel admins see who reacted?

WhatsApp says admins can see how you interact with their content, and channel metrics include the number and type of emoji reactions. Other followers can't see your reactions. They only see a total count of reactions on an update.

Can a WhatsApp channel admin see who has read a message?

WhatsApp's pages don't describe a per-person list of who read an update. They list metrics such as accounts reached, top regions, follows and unfollows, and the number of followers. We can't confirm that admins see individual readers.

Can other people see what channels I follow?

No. WhatsApp says your contacts can't see which channels you follow, and other followers can't see who you are. The one exception is a contact who is an admin of a channel you follow, since admins can see their followers' details.
