WhatsApp Groups for Business

How Many People Can Be in a WhatsApp Group?

How many people can be in a WhatsApp group? Up to 1024 members, according to WhatsApp's help article on creating a group. Calls are much smaller: 32 people in a group voice or video call.

If you're planning a group for a class, a street, a customer list or a team, those two numbers are the ones that matter. A community, which bundles several groups together, holds up to 100 groups and 2,000 members in total. Below are the caps WhatsApp states, what it says about admins, and what to do when one group isn't enough.

The limits in one table

These are the numbers from WhatsApp's help center pages, checked on 2026-10-30.

WhatsApp's help page on creating a group says "up to 1024 members". Its announcement of communities, dated November 3, 2022, already described groups of up to 1024 users, so the figure has held since at least then.

One older page contradicts the community figure. A community guide on whatsapp.com says a community can hold a maximum of fifty groups. The Help Center's "How to create a community" article says 100, and that's the one to trust.

How many admins can a group have?

As many as you like. WhatsApp's help page on managing group admins says a group can have an unlimited number of admins, and any admin can make a member an admin. The person who created the group can't be removed and stays an admin unless they exit the group.

Communities are different: WhatsApp caps them at 20 admins. In a group, admins also control permissions such as who can send messages or edit the group info. The full set of admin controls is in how to manage members and admins in a WhatsApp group.

Group calls: 32 people

WhatsApp says group calling allows up to 32 people to join a group voice call. For video, it says only 32 people can be active on a call at one time.

If the group has more than 32 people, WhatsApp's steps for a video call tell you to select up to 31 people to join your video call, which keeps it within the 32 limit.

Two other places repeat the same number. The WhatsApp Mac and Windows apps allow calls with up to 32 people. And in a blog post dated October 14, 2026, WhatsApp says guests without an account can join 1:1 and group calls with up to 32 people once the host admits them.

What happens when a group is full

For a regular group, the help pages we read don't describe a "group is full" message, so we can't tell you exactly what you'll see. What's documented is the 1024 ceiling and the next step: start a second group.

WhatsApp has a shortcut for it. Open the group, tap Group info, then tap Create Similar Group. You can deselect anyone you don't want to carry over and add other contacts.

For a community, the help center is specific: you can't add new members if the community is full, and the person who can't be added has to wait until someone leaves.

When one group isn't enough

Past 1024 people, WhatsApp gives you three other formats, and each one gives something up.

  • A community. One space with up to 100 groups, plus an announcement group where only admins can send messages. The 2,000 member limit covers everyone across the groups. It's built for several topics under one roof. Our comparison of a WhatsApp community and a group covers how members experience it.
  • A broadcast list. Up to 256 contacts per list, and each person gets your message as an individual chat, so they don't see each other's replies. Only people who saved your number receive it. See broadcast vs group before you pick, because broadcasts have their own limits, covered in the WhatsApp broadcast limit.
  • A channel. One-way updates to an unlimited audience. Followers can't reply directly to updates, so it's for announcements, not conversation.

Another route is plain splitting: one group per region, class or product line, each well below the cap. Smaller groups are also easier to moderate. If you need written ground rules, WhatsApp group rules has examples.

One related setting scales with size. WhatsApp's help center says that if a group has more than 256 members, Edit group settings defaults to Only admins. You can read how that and the other permissions work in only admins can send messages in WhatsApp.

How to add people or start a second group

  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name.
  2. To add people, tap Add members and pick contacts. If a contact doesn't have WhatsApp, they're sent an SMS invite.
  3. To create a new group, tap Chats, then New Chat > New group on Android or the plus button > New group on iPhone, choose contacts, name it and confirm.

By default, members of groups with fewer than 33 members can create invite links, and admins always can. Admins change who may invite under Group permissions.

Where Tenashi fits

A business that outgrows one group can end up with many: one per cohort, branch or customer segment. Checking all of them on one phone, with several staff sharing it, is where messages get missed.

When your number is connected to Tenashi, the groups that number is in appear in the shared inbox next to your one-to-one chats. Your team can read and reply there, assign a group chat to an agent, and create groups, add or remove members and promote admins from the workspace. WhatsApp's limits still apply: a group on Tenashi is a normal WhatsApp group. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it.
