If You Save Someone's Number, Will They Know on WhatsApp?

If you save someone's WhatsApp number, will they know? WhatsApp's help pages describe no notification when you save a contact, and its blog post on adding and managing contacts doesn't mention telling anyone either.

What saving does change is what each of you can see. Several privacy settings are built from your address book, and one documented rule means saving a first-time sender lets your read receipts reach them. Below is each setting, the trace the other person might notice, and the questions WhatsApp leaves open.

Does saving a number notify them?

WhatsApp's help center has no article that says saving a contact sends the other person a notice, and none that says it doesn't. Its October 22, 2024 blog post on adding and managing contacts introduces a choice to save a contact exclusively to WhatsApp, and says nothing about telling anyone.

So no notification is documented. Saving happens in your address book, or in WhatsApp's own contact list if you pick that option, and nothing in the help pages describes the other person being told.

The one trace they might notice: read receipts

There's no notice, but there is a documented side effect. WhatsApp's safety page says that when you get the first message from someone who isn't saved in your contacts, your read receipt won't show to the sender until you reply or add them as a contact, even with read receipts on.

So if a stranger messaged you and you save their number without replying, your read receipts can start reaching them, assuming you haven't turned read receipts off. WhatsApp doesn't say whether that applies to messages you'd already read before saving. How the ticks work is in what WhatsApp's ticks mean.

What saving changes: the settings that use your contacts

Several privacy settings are built on "contacts". WhatsApp's privacy page defines the options like this: My contacts means contacts from your address book, and My contacts except... means your address book minus the people you exclude. Here is what each setting depends on.

SettingDefaultWhere saving matters
Profile photoAny user can see itIf you choose My contacts, only people in your address book can
Last seen and onlineContacts see last seen; any user sees when you're onlineEven on Everyone, only people you've called or messaged before, or saved, can see it
Read receiptsAny userA first-time sender you haven't saved doesn't get your read receipt until you reply or save them
StatusYour contacts can see your statusesBuilt from your contacts; you can't set status to Everyone
About and linksYour contacts (about, links)Follows the option you pick

The rule behind the table is that your settings apply to your address book. Saving a number moves that person into the group your "My contacts" choice covers. It doesn't change what they've set for themselves.

If you save their number, will they see your status?

Only if they have your number too, going by WhatsApp's wording. The default is that your contacts can see your statuses, so saving someone puts them in that audience. But the same privacy page says you can't share your status with people who don't have your number, so the viewer needs your number as well.

In other words, both sides matter: your address book decides who's in your audience, and the viewer has to have your number. WhatsApp doesn't define "have your number" further than that, so take it as the help center's wording rather than a tested rule. Our guide on why you can't see someone's WhatsApp status goes through the documented causes.

One related rule: if you mention a person in a status, they can see it even if they aren't in your audience. Details are in what a status mention means.

If you save their number, will they see your profile photo?

The default is yes whether or not you saved each other. WhatsApp's default is that any user can see your profile photo. If you changed it to My contacts, only people in your address book can see it. The same page says it's not possible to see who viewed your profile.

If you can't see someone's photo, saving them or being saved isn't the only explanation. Blocking also hides photo changes. See why you can't see a WhatsApp profile picture.

Last seen and online

Last seen depends on saving too. WhatsApp says that even if you choose Everyone, only people you've called and messaged before, or saved as a contact, can see your last seen and online. It also says that if you don't share yours, you can't see other people's.

Its list of reasons you can't see someone's last seen includes "you haven't chatted with them before or saved them as a contact" and "they haven't messaged you before or saved you as a contact". A blocked contact appears on the same list, so a missing last seen proves nothing alone. More in WhatsApp last seen and online.

What the other person can see whether or not you saved them

Your number, for now. WhatsApp's privacy page says there is no way to hide your phone number when using WhatsApp, and that it stays visible even if the recipient hasn't saved your number.

Usernames change that where they're available, and they also hinge on saving. WhatsApp says usernames are rolling out gradually and might not be available to you yet. Once you have one, your number isn't shown to anyone who doesn't already have it saved: they see your username instead. People who saved your number keep seeing the name they saved and your number.

How to save, and undo it

Saving happens in your phone's address book, or in WhatsApp's own contact list if you use the save-to-WhatsApp option. For removing, WhatsApp's help page on blocked contacts says to delete the contact from your phone's address book. Because the My contacts options are defined by your address book, deleting someone there is the lever that takes them out of that group.

Where Tenashi fits

For a business, the question flips. A customer who never saved your number may not see your status, so for them the chat is the whole relationship, and on a shared phone the details about that customer end up in one person's head.

When your number is connected to Tenashi, each chat in the shared inbox has a contact profile under it with custom fields, labels and notes, so the team records who the customer is whether or not anyone saved them on the phone. Tenashi doesn't show status updates, last seen or profile-photo views. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. FAQ

If I save someone's WhatsApp number, will they know?

WhatsApp's help pages describe no notification when you save a contact. The one documented side effect: if they messaged you first and you hadn't saved them, your read receipts don't show until you reply or save them, so saving can let your blue ticks reach them.

If I save someone's number on WhatsApp, will they see my status?

Only if they also have your number. Your default audience is your contacts, so saving them adds them to it. But WhatsApp also says you can't share your status with people who don't have your number, so the viewer needs your number too.

If I save someone's number on WhatsApp, will they see my DP?

By default any WhatsApp user can see your profile photo, saved or not. If you switched to My contacts, only people in your address book can, so saving their number puts them in that group. Their own setting decides whether you see their photo, and your saving them doesn't change it.

Does WhatsApp notify when you save a contact?

No notice is described in WhatsApp's help center or its blog post on adding and managing contacts. Saving changes your own contact list, and with it which of your settings reach that person, such as last seen, status and read receipts for a first-time sender.

If someone has not saved my number, can they see my WhatsApp status?

Not by WhatsApp's wording. Its privacy page says you can't share your status with people who don't have your number. By that wording, someone who doesn't have your number can't see your status, even if you saved theirs. The exception is a status mention, which lets the mentioned person see that one status.
