Why Can't I See Someone's WhatsApp Status?
You know a contact posts statuses, yet theirs never shows up in your Updates tab. The first thing to rule out is their status audience: each person chooses who can view their status, and you may be outside the list. A block, a status you hid yourself, or one that has already expired looks the same from your side.
WhatsApp doesn't tell you which of these applies, and it won't confirm whether someone has blocked you. Two of them you can check yourself in a few seconds (hidden updates and timing). The others sit in the other person's settings, so the only way to know why you can't see their status is to ask.
The reasons a status doesn't show
These are the causes the help center supports, with what each means for you.
| Reason | What's going on | Can you check it? |
|---|---|---|
| Not in their audience | The default audience is the person's contacts, and they can narrow it with the lists in their privacy settings | No, only they can see their audience |
| They blocked you | Users can't see a status after the poster blocked them | Not directly. WhatsApp can't tell you |
| You hid their status | Hidden statuses move to Hidden updates | Yes |
| It expired | Statuses disappear after 24 hours | Yes, ask when they posted |
| They haven't posted | Nothing to show | Ask them |
If nothing on your side explains it, the rest comes down to their settings, which you can't see.
They chose who sees their status
Status isn't public. WhatsApp's privacy page says you can't set status privacy to Everyone or share your status with people who don't have your number. The default is that your contacts can see your statuses.
The privacy page describes two of the choices like this, and the blocking page also mentions an Only share with list:
- My contacts: only people in their address book.
- My contacts except...: their address book, minus anyone they exclude.
- Only share with...: a chosen list of people.
So when you're left out, you may simply be outside the list they picked. WhatsApp's pages don't describe a notice sent to someone who is excluded, and they don't list one for the person who excluded you either, so don't expect a message either way. To find out where you stand, you have to ask them.
Do both people need to have each other's number saved?
The help center never says "both people must save each other" in those words, but two lines on its privacy page come close.
First, the audience is built from the poster's address book. By default "your contacts can see your statuses", and the My contacts and My contacts except... options are defined as contacts from the address book. So if someone never saved your number, or deleted it, those two audiences leave you out. Second, the same page says you can't share your status "with people who don't have your number", which points the other way: the viewer needs the poster's number too. WhatsApp doesn't define "have your number" any further, so treat that half as the help center's wording, not a tested rule.
If you want to know whether saving a number sends anything to the other person, see whether they know when you save a number on WhatsApp.
If they blocked you
A block hides their status from you. WhatsApp's page on blocking says users can't see your status after you've blocked them, but they can see a status you posted before you blocked them, until it expires.
A missing status is one of several block signs, and on its own it proves nothing. WhatsApp lists these together: no blue ticks, one grey tick that never becomes two, no profile photo updates, calls that don't connect, no last seen or online. It then says these could also be due to other reasons. Our guide on how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp compares them.
Check your own side: hidden statuses
WhatsApp used to call this muting a status. It's now Hide. You will still receive hidden statuses, but they're delivered to a Hidden updates section instead of the main list.
- Open the Updates tab.
- Tap Hidden updates. If you follow channels, swipe left on statuses and tap Hidden.
- Find the person and tap and hold their status, then tap Unhide (on iPhone, confirm with Unhide again).
Two details from the help page. The Hidden updates section doesn't appear if your hidden contacts haven't shared a recent status. And hiding someone's status doesn't affect their ability to see yours. The audience side of hiding is covered in how to hide your WhatsApp status from someone.
Expired and mentioned statuses
Statuses disappear after 24 hours. If someone posted yesterday morning, it may simply be gone by the time you look. More on timing is in how long a WhatsApp status stays up.
There is one exception to audiences. When someone mentions you in a status, WhatsApp says you can see that status even if you aren't in their audience, and you get a message in your chat. It works only for that one status, and it won't change who sees their future ones. More in WhatsApp status mentions.
Where Tenashi fits
For a business, the question flips: why don't customers see your status? Status is built from the poster's own contacts, so the people who can see a business's status depend on how that number's phone has people saved and on the audience settings chosen there.
Tenashi doesn't post, show or manage WhatsApp Status. It's a shared inbox for the messages on your connected number, with contact profiles, labels and notes under every chat, so your team can see who a customer is and what was said. That covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. To get customers into a chat in the first place, see WhatsApp click to chat links, and for the wider picture our guide to WhatsApp for business.

FAQ
Why can't I see someone's WhatsApp status?
The reasons WhatsApp's help center supports: you're not in their status audience, they blocked you, you hid their status, or it expired after 24 hours. WhatsApp doesn't say which one applies, and it won't tell you whether someone blocked you. Check Hidden updates first, then ask the person.
Can I see someone's WhatsApp status if they blocked me?
No. WhatsApp says users can't see your status after you've blocked them, although they can still see a status you posted before the block until it expires. A missing status alone doesn't prove a block, because audience settings and hidden statuses look the same from your side.
Can I see someone's WhatsApp status without them saving my number?
Not under the default setting. WhatsApp says the default audience is the poster's contacts, and it defines My contacts as contacts from their address book. The exception is a status mention: if they mention you, you can see that one status even though you aren't in their audience.
Can I see someone's WhatsApp status if they deleted my number?
Not if their audience is My contacts or My contacts except, because both are defined as contacts from their address book. WhatsApp's help pages describe no notice when someone removes a number from their phone, so a missing status may be the only change you see.
Can I see someone's WhatsApp status if they excluded me?
No, unless they mention you. If they picked My contacts except and left you out, or chose Only share with and didn't pick you, you're outside the audience. A status mention is the exception: it lets you see that one status even if you aren't in their audience.
Will the person know I can't see their status?
WhatsApp's help pages don't describe any notice to either side: none to them when you can't see their status, and none to you when you've been left out of an audience. To find out, check your own Hidden updates first, then ask the person directly.
A missing status is a settings question, not an error to fix. If your team wants customer conversations in one shared place, get started with Tenashi.
