Can You Hide Typing on WhatsApp? The Typing Indicator
You started a reply, changed your mind, and now you're wondering whether the other person saw "typing..." appear. As far as WhatsApp's help center shows, you can't turn off the typing indicator: it describes no setting that hides it. The privacy menu has controls for last seen, online, profile photo, read receipts and more, but none for typing.
What WhatsApp does document is who sees it: the recipient, in individual and group chats, but not in channels. Its page on last seen adds that people online in a chat with you can see when you're typing.
What the typing indicator is
WhatsApp describes it in one sentence. When you're typing a message, the recipient sees a typing indicator, which appears as three dots (an ellipsis) in the chat thread.
| Where | Does typing show? |
|---|---|
| One-to-one chat | Yes |
| Group chat | Yes |
| Channel | No, it doesn't appear in channels |
WhatsApp's page describes only the three dots in the chat thread, so we don't describe any other layout.
Can you turn it off?
No setting is documented. None of WhatsApp's help pages on typing, last seen and online, or privacy settings offers a toggle for it, so there is no official way to hide that you're typing.
That also means these things don't hide it, going by what the pages say:
- Last seen and online set to Nobody. That setting controls last seen and online. The typing note on the same help page says people online in a chat with you can see when you're typing, and it lists no exception.
- Turning off read receipts. That setting covers blue ticks and related receipts, not typing.
Drafting a long reply in another app means less time in the chat's message box, but WhatsApp doesn't say how a pasted message is shown, so that isn't a documented way to hide typing either. Don't install a modded WhatsApp client or an app that promises to hide typing. They can't be verified, and they ask for risky access to your account.
Who sees typing in a group?
In a group, the typing indicator appears in the chat like it does in a one-to-one chat. WhatsApp says it shows in individual and group chats. The help center doesn't spell out how it displays when several members type at once, so don't rely on a particular layout.
What the last seen page does say is that "people online in a chat with you" can see when you're typing. It doesn't say more about who counts, so don't assume a member who has the group closed sees nothing. Our post on last seen and online explains how online status works and what you can hide.
What typing does and doesn't prove
Typing tells you that someone is writing a message in that chat right now. It doesn't tell you much else.
- It isn't a read receipt. Online status doesn't mean the person has read your message either; WhatsApp's last seen page says so. To understand what the blue ticks do show, see what the WhatsApp ticks mean.
- It doesn't promise a reply is coming. Nothing in WhatsApp's documentation says a typing indicator will be followed by a message.
- It isn't a way to read their messages. If you're after reading a message without the sender knowing, see how to read WhatsApp messages without blue ticks.
Typing then stopped, and "recording audio"
These are two of the searches people make about the indicator, and WhatsApp's help pages answer neither.
Typing appeared and then stopped. The help center doesn't explain it. Its only typing page says the recipient sees three dots while you're typing a message, and says nothing about what it means when they disappear without a message. Don't read intent into it.
"Recording audio." WhatsApp's help pages don't describe a separate recording indicator at all. The label's own wording is all WhatsApp gives you, and there's no help page that says what it shows the other person or when.
Where Tenashi fits
On a business number, the typing indicator is part of what a reply looks like to the customer. Messages that land with no "typing..." first, many in a row, don't look like a person writing.
Tenashi connects your own WhatsApp number so your team works one shared inbox. Before each message it sends, Tenashi shows the recipient "typing..." briefly. That is part of its human-paced, warm-up-aware sending. Tenashi doesn't show you when a customer is typing, online or last seen, and it doesn't change any WhatsApp privacy setting. Our post on sending WhatsApp messages safely at volume goes into the sending side, and our guide to WhatsApp for business covers running a team on one number. This covers chats on your own connected number, from the day you connect it.

FAQ
Can you turn off the typing indicator on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp's help center describes no setting to turn it off. The typing indicator shows in individual and group chats to people who are online in the chat with you. The privacy settings cover last seen, online, photo, about and read receipts, but not typing.
Can you hide typing on WhatsApp?
Not with any documented setting. WhatsApp's last seen page, where you'd set last seen and online to Nobody, still says people online in a chat with you can see when you're typing. Read receipts don't cover it either. Apps that promise to hide typing can't be verified and ask for risky access.
Does the typing indicator show in WhatsApp groups?
Yes. WhatsApp says the typing indicator appears in individual and group chats. It doesn't appear in channels. Only people who are online in the chat with you can see it, and the help center doesn't describe how several people typing at once are displayed.
Why did WhatsApp typing start and then stop?
WhatsApp's help center doesn't explain it. Its typing page only says the recipient sees three dots while someone is typing a message, in individual and group chats. It says nothing about dots that disappear without a message, so typing that stops isn't proof of anything.
What does "recording audio" mean on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp's help pages don't describe a recording indicator, so there's no official meaning to quote. The only page about typing covers the three dots shown while someone types a message. Beyond the label's own words, anything said about it is a guess.
WhatsApp documents no way to switch typing off, so plan on the other person seeing it. To work a business number with a team, get started with Tenashi.
