How to Read WhatsApp Messages Without Blue Ticks

You want to read WhatsApp messages without the sender getting two blue ticks, maybe because you're not ready to answer yet. Is there a way to do it that WhatsApp actually supports?

Yes, one: turn off read receipts in your privacy settings. With the setting off, your one-to-one chats stop sending blue ticks. The cost is that you stop seeing other people's blue ticks too, and two things still go out: group chat receipts and voice message played marks. Other tricks, like reading from a notification, aren't described on any official WhatsApp page.

The documented way: turn off read receipts

The setting sits in your privacy settings, and it's your own choice, not a workaround.

  1. On Android, tap More options (three dots), then Settings > Privacy, and turn off Read receipts.
  2. On iPhone, tap Settings (or your profile picture), then Privacy, and turn off Read receipts.

From then on, people messaging you one-to-one don't get blue ticks when you read. The sender's message stays at two grey ticks, which means delivered. They can't tell from the ticks whether you've read it, and two grey ticks are also what they'd see if you simply haven't opened the chat. More on that in two grey ticks but no blue.

What turning it off costs you

WhatsApp states the trade directly. It works both ways, as the help center puts it: if you turn off read receipts, you won't be able to see read receipts from others. Their blue ticks on your messages stop showing too.

Status is affected as well. WhatsApp says that with read receipts off, you might not be able to see who views your status, and others may not be able to see when you view theirs. If you post statuses for customers or contacts, that matters. The full picture of status views is in who viewed my WhatsApp status.

What it doesn't hide

SituationStill sent with receipts off?
One-to-one chat readNo blue ticks sent
Group chat readYes. WhatsApp says read receipts are always sent for group chats
Voice message playedYes. The play receipt can't be turned off
Typing in the chatYes. People online in a chat with you can see when you're typing
Last seen and onlineDepends on your own last seen and online setting

The group and voice message rows come straight from WhatsApp: turning off read receipts won't disable them, and there's no way to turn those off. In a group, the sender can still open Message info and see who has read the message. How group ticks work is covered in WhatsApp ticks meaning.

Typing is separate. WhatsApp says the typing indicator appears in individual and group chats, and the help pages don't offer a setting to hide it. If you start replying, the other person can see it while they're online in that chat. Last seen and online has its own setting and a catch: if you don't share yours, you can't see others'. See WhatsApp last seen and online and the typing indicator.

Reading from the notification

A common idea is to read the preview in the notification without opening the chat. WhatsApp's help pages don't say whether doing that sends a read receipt, so there's no official answer to give. If it matters to you, the documented setting above is the only one you can rely on. For more on notifications, see the WhatsApp notification history guide.

The same goes for the other tricks that circulate, such as airplane mode before opening a chat, or apps that promise to show messages without notifying anyone. WhatsApp documents none of these as a way to read without sending a receipt. Apps that promise it also ask for permissions on your phone that you shouldn't hand to a stranger, and they can't change what WhatsApp sends.

When blue ticks never come anyway

Receipts don't always appear even when both sides have them on. WhatsApp's list of reasons includes: the recipient hasn't opened your conversation, either side has a connection problem, the phones' date and time settings are wrong, and one that catches out businesses messaging new contacts: when a person gets your message for the first time, a read receipt might not be sent to you.

So grey ticks don't prove someone is avoiding you, and the absence of blue ticks on your side doesn't prove anyone is fooled either.

Where Tenashi fits

On a business number, the pressure to read quietly comes from one phone being passed around: whoever opens the chat decides what the customer sees, and nobody else knows whether it was read or answered.

With your number connected to Tenashi, the team works the same chats in one shared inbox. An agent can be assigned the chat and leave an internal note or @mention a colleague that the customer never sees, so nobody has to hover over one phone to know who is handling it. Tenashi doesn't change any WhatsApp privacy setting or how read receipts work. It covers chats on your own connected business number, from the day you connect it. More on running a team on one number is in our guide to WhatsApp for business.

FAQ

How can I read WhatsApp messages without sending blue ticks?

Turn off read receipts: Settings > Privacy > Read receipts (on Android, open More options first). One-to-one chats then stop sending blue ticks. Group chats and voice message played marks still go out, and you stop seeing other people's blue ticks as well.

Can I read WhatsApp messages without them knowing?

Only in the sense of blue ticks in one-to-one chats, using the read receipts setting. If they're in the chat while you type a reply, they can see the typing indicator, and in groups receipts are always sent. WhatsApp documents no other method, so we don't claim one.

Can I read WhatsApp messages without opening the chat?

You can see a preview in a notification, but WhatsApp's help pages don't say whether that counts as read, so there's no official answer. If you need a documented way to avoid sending blue ticks, turn off read receipts in your privacy settings.

Does reading from the notification send a read receipt?

WhatsApp doesn't document this. No help page says either way. Relying on it is a guess. The reliable option is the read receipts setting, which stops blue ticks in one-to-one chats, though not in groups.

How do I read a message without marking it as read?

WhatsApp has no per-message option. The setting is all or nothing: with read receipts off, one-to-one chats don't send blue ticks, group chats still do, and you lose other people's receipts too. You can turn it back on at any time from the same menu.

The read receipts setting is the one supported way to read quietly, and it works for one-to-one chats only. For a team that shares one number, get started with Tenashi.
